With protected areas, river landscapes and historic places to learn, Kane reveals itself in different ways. Those looking to combine nature and history will find everything from restored prairies and wetlands to museums, a windmill and trails along waterways and through forests. To plan your trip, it’s worth first considering whether you’d rather focus your time on landscapes, culture or specific activities.

Nature, Water and Trails

The Kane County forest preserve system includes more than 23,000 acres of woodland, wetlands and prairies across nearly 100 sites. At Tekakwitha Woods, elevated oak-maple forests, riverside woodland along the river and restored prairie on former farmland alternate. One natural feature also has a specific date attached to it: an oak tree at Tekakwitha Woods dates to 1864. Different landscapes sit side by side here, while the old tree provides a historical connection to the surrounding area.

The Fox River Trail runs along the eastern boundary of Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserve. The Great Western Trail passes through streams and wetlands where ducks, coots and great blue herons nest and raise their young. At Raymond Street Forest Preserve, a tunnel beneath the railroad tracks connects the Fox River Trail with the Elgin Branch of the Illinois Prairie Path. The Riverbend Bike Trail heads south to a natural waterfall eight feet high, cascading into and joining a clear, babbling stream.

Brundidge Road offers a rural perspective: on the edge of the city of Geneva, it creates a transition to the countryside and preserves Kane County’s agricultural heritage. Brundidge Road, Ke-De-Ka Road and Thurnau Road are designated Rustic Roads in Kane County. These three names offer another indication of the region’s rural character; the description of the transition at the edge of the city refers specifically to Brundidge Road.

History and Interpretation

The Durant-Peterson House Museum brings history to life, showcasing the lifestyle and furnishings of the 1840s. The similarly named Durant House Museum has its own historical connection: it was built in 1843. Pioneer Sholes School is an authentically restored and furnished one-room country schoolhouse. Its collection includes schoolbooks from the 19th and early 20th centuries, early official educational records from Kane County, and oral histories about one-room schools. Together, the buildings, furnishings and collection offer different perspectives on the history of everyday school life.

The Fabyan Villa Museum has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. It offers a complete guided tour of both floors with a knowledgeable guide. Fabyan Windmill is also listed on the register. Its tours explain how the windmill works and take place on Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., from the first Sunday in June through the last Sunday in September. If you’re planning a tour, check the current schedule in advance.

Activities and Wildlife Watching

Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching in a wooded area. At Voyageur Landing Forest Preserve, a boat launch provides access to activities on the water; seasonal water conditions may affect its use. Big Rock Forest Preserve also includes an area for horseback riding. Together, these destinations offer everything from trails through woodland landscapes to activities on the water and on horseback.

At Peck Farm Park, hundreds of non-native butterflies fly, feed and land around visitors. The Interpretive Center there offers programs for students of all ages, and an environmental education playground has eight learning stations. Those interested in archery will find areas at Arrowwood Point Archery Complex for recreational archery, bowhunter training and crossbow use.

As you plan your stay, you can weigh these options: trails and landscapes, historical interpretation or activities on the water.
