Winnebago offers several ways to experience nature and culture: forest preserves and trails are part of the picture, along with gardens, a dinosaur skeleton and historic buildings. You can therefore focus your trip on landscapes, outdoor activities or exhibits. The individual sites vary considerably in scale and subject matter.

Natural Areas and Gardens

Winnebago County has more than 10,000 acres of forest preserves and parks. Severson Dells Forest Preserve covers 369 acres of woodland, a stream and dolomite cliffs, along with three miles of hiking trails. In the northwest of Rockford, Searls Park contains a complex of more than 66 acres of remnants of dry, mesic and wet prairie, as well as wetlands. In 1984, 66 acres were designated an Illinois Nature Preserve.

The Wild Roots Nature Center at Severson Dells offers the public nature exhibits, a library and a bookstore. Weekly interactive programs are also held there; dates may change. The Grove at Severson Dells is a nature-play landscape for climbing, building, exploring and creative outdoor play. In the same preserve, trails and natural landscape features sit alongside a place designed for playful exploration.

For a different kind of garden landscape, visit the 12-acre Anderson Japanese Gardens, where streams, waterfalls, winding paths and koi-filled ponds shape the grounds. Fresco at the Garden serves breakfast and lunch there daily; service hours may change. Eclipse Lagoon features two fountains, a waterfall, a pedestrian bridge and terrace areas. A path connects Nicholas Conservatory with Sinnissippi Rose Garden.

Trails and Seasonal Activities

Trail routes vary considerably in length and course: Perryville Path is 14.9 miles long and runs north from Home Depot to Rock Cut State Park. Willow Creek Path is 1.57 miles long, follows Willow Creek and connects Harlem High School with Rock Cut State Park. When conditions are suitable, Rock Cut State Park also offers groomed cross-country ski trails.

Exhibits and Historic Sites

The Burpee Museum’s “Jane: Diary of a Dinosaur” exhibit features the fully restored, 21-foot skeleton of a juvenile T. rex. Since 1999, the Burpee Museum has hosted PaleoFest, a three-day paleontology program with educational offerings and activities. Dates and programming vary from year to year.

Midway Village includes 26 historic buildings. Macktown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Both sites add further historical themes to the Burpee Museum exhibits, while the gardens and natural areas offer different points of interest.

At Critter Creek, children can operate water features and sluice gates, build dams and redirect flowing water. This nature play experience combines hands-on activities involving water and the landscape. In spring, the Nicholas Conservatory’s annual butterfly exhibit lets visitors see caterpillars, chrysalises and adult butterflies, and visit a butterfly house. The seasonal program and its dates may change, so check event dates before your visit.
