Unterengstringen lies in the Limmat Valley at an altitude of around 400 metres, on the southern slope of the Altberg ridge. The town offers several points of interest for a stay: the Lively Limmat themed trail, Fahr Abbey, visible traces of the former town of Glanzenberg and a golf course on the Limmat.

On foot along the Lively Limmat themed trail

The Lively Limmat themed trail is a circular route between Unterengstringen and Schlieren, with six stops in total. The route is about 3.5 kilometres long, and the walking time alone is stated as around one hour. Walking time and time spent at the stops are two separate parts of the visit: if you take time to explore the stops, this is in addition to the walking time alone.

The trail’s gravel paths are also suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The route is freely accessible year-round. It can be reached by public transport via the Eckstein or Langwisen stops in Unterengstringen. This makes it possible to factor the route length, walking time and accessibility into your plans without setting a specific amount of time to spend at the stops.

Local history and Glanzenberg

The Second Battle of Zurich was decided on Unterengstringen soil in 1799, between Russian and French armies. The former town of Glanzenberg is also among the visible traces of history: remnants of its walls can be seen in Unterengstringen. From Glanzenberg, the preserved foundations of the eastern wall, together with an adjoining building, and another house in the southwest of the former town are visible. These individual wall and building structures provide a tangible architectural connection to the past.

The Unterengstringen Local History Museum is housed in a former country house dating from the 18th century, which belonged to a Zurich burgher family. The permanent exhibition is complemented by documents on local history, a collection of images by Otto Baumberger and regular temporary exhibitions. The local history collection includes objects from farming, viticulture, crafts and trades, as well as coins, measures and weights, and household and kitchen items. This lets you encounter local history through both images and documents and objects from different areas of everyday and working life.

Fahr Abbey and golf course

Since 2008, Fahr Abbey has been an exclave of the Canton of Aargau. It belongs to the municipality of Würenlos and is entirely surrounded by the Zurich municipality of Unterengstringen. It is a ten-minute walk from the Unterengstringen, Eckstein bus station. The abbey offers guided tours of its historic complex and gardens. Both its special administrative status and the tours available are useful to know when visiting the site.

The Unterengstringen Golf Club operates a 9-hole golf course directly on the Limmat. It is located on historic Glanzenberg near Fahr Abbey. Unlike the themed trail, which is freely accessible year-round, golf is subject to certain conditions: players paying a green fee may play on weekdays when no competitions are scheduled, and a telephone reservation is required. Check the conditions with the club by phone in advance.
