Uitikon: Observatory, Church and Uetliberg
Accommodation in Uitikon
Uitikon is located in the lower Reppischtal, where it meets the Limmattal, on the western flank of Uetliberg. The municipality includes the districts of Ringlikon, Waldegg and Uitikon; the topography-driven division into three parts is further emphasized by the road via Waldegg. There are several ways to plan a stay: astronomy, a historic church building and outdoor activities. Which one is the deciding factor depends on whether you are more interested in the night sky, architectural history or routes to Uetliberg.
The municipality’s orientation also provides a wider regional context: in terms of jobs, business activities, public transport and cultural offerings, Uitikon is oriented toward the neighboring city of Zurich.
Observatory and the night sky
The Uitikon Observatory was built in 1979 and is located on the municipality’s Allmend. Its program is aimed at children aged six and older, as well as adults; program details may change. Depending on the season and weather, visitors can observe planets, stars, and distant nebulae and galaxies. Which celestial objects are visible therefore depends on conditions.
Even outside the observatory, the night sky can be enjoyed without a telescope, thanks to the natural screening from Zurich’s lights. Weather and light conditions play a role. When choosing between the observatory and an open view of the sky, different conditions therefore need to be taken into account: at the observatory, the season and weather matter; outdoors, light conditions also come into play.
Church in the village center
The church is in the village center, on slightly elevated ground. It was commissioned by Johann Jakob Steiner, and its topping-out ceremony was celebrated on June 22, 1625. It is one of the first churches newly built in Reformed Zurich. Its location serves as a landmark in the village, while its architectural history draws attention to an early church building in Reformed Zurich.
The “Uitikon Dorf” stop is directly in front of the church. PostBus routes No. 215 and 245, as well as the Uitikon local bus, stop there; from here, you can connect to the S10 of the Uetliberg Railway. Check the timetable before traveling, as services may change.
Sports and exercise
The Uitikon sports facilities include an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and fitness amenities. Another way to stay active is the pump track in Uitikon, with a circuit for bikes, scooters or skateboards. Facility information may change; check the latest details before planning a visit.
The Zurich vitaparcours Uitikon is right next to the indoor swimming pool. Its starting point is above the pool, by the Allmend parking lot. You should also check the starting-point information before your visit.
Route to Uetliberg
A forest road leads from the parking lot in Uitikon-Waldegg to the summit of Uetliberg. Among the listed routes to Uetliberg, the path from Uitikon-Waldegg has the gentlest incline. This is a specific point of comparison when choosing a route; trail conditions can vary. It is therefore advisable to check current conditions before setting out.
