Nyon: Roman Heritage, Museums and Lake Geneva

Nyon lies on the shores of Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. The city offers different starting points for planning a hotel stay: Roman history, museums, markets, art walks and activities on the lake. You can decide which of these will shape your trip based on your interests and travel dates.

Roman History and Museums

The Château de Nyon is a Romanesque fortress dating from the 12th century. It was remodelled in the 16th century and stands on a promontory above Lake Geneva. Since 1888, the château has housed a museum whose collections preserve and trace the city’s two-thousand-year history. The castle’s history and collections therefore offer a way to explore Nyon’s long development.

The Musée romain takes visitors to a different historic site: it is located in the foundations of the ancient forum basilica, discovered in 1974. Its focus is the heritage of Colonia Iulia Equestris, founded during Julius Caesar’s lifetime in the 1st century BC, and its urban centre, Noviodunum. The exhibition brings together ancient remains, models and immersive digital installations. Here, the archaeological site and the presentation of the Roman city are seen together.

The Musée du Léman is dedicated to the natural and human heritage of Lake Geneva and makes it accessible to visitors. Interpretive features include large aquariums, an authentic steam engine and digital installations. Unlike the museums focused on the city’s history and Roman heritage, this museum turns the spotlight on the lake and its heritage.

Art Walks and Public Spaces

Nyon has two art walks where you can explore 16 works in parks, streets and public buildings. The southern art walk leads from the railway station via Parc du Buis, the lakeshore and Château de Nyon to Usine à Gaz. Its named stops bring together public art, a park, the lakeshore and a château. As works may be relocated, check the current route before setting out.

Markets and Festivals

The Saturday market stretches along Rue de la Gare, Place St-Martin and Place du Marché; it is open from 8 am to 2 pm. The Foire artisanale de Nyon takes place on Place Bel-Air on the first Thursday of every month from March to November. From 8 am to 5 pm, artisans from the region display creations and other items. There is also a flea market on Nyon’s quays on the last Sunday of every month, except in August. Check market dates and arrangements again before your trip.

Festivals also shape the events calendar: six festivals take place every year between February and August. They include Les Hivernales, Visions du Réel, Caribana Festival, Rive Jazzy, Paléo Festival and far° – festival des arts vivants. Lakeshore and Outdoor Activities

Plage des Trois-Jetées is a municipal beach that is free to access year-round and is not supervised. Facilities include changing rooms, an outdoor shower, toilets, table tennis tables and a playground. Facilities may change or be maintained seasonally; check the current access status and conditions on site before your visit. The fact that the beach is unsupervised is also something to bear in mind when planning your visit.

For activities on the lake, you can rent equipment in Nyon for pursuits such as pedal boating, windsurfing and water skiing; other water sports are also available. Rental options and providers may change, so check the current offer if you are planning a specific activity.

The Sentier du Boiron offers a different landscape. The path follows the Boiron River through flowering meadows and among tall standard trees. Along the way, there is a shaded recreational and play area as well as a picnic area with eight tables and four grills. These places offer a clear contrast: by the lake, the focus is on the beach and water sports; along the Boiron, it is on the meadow trail and designated recreation area.

Getting There and Getting Around

Nyon is connected to Switzerland’s transport network by the Route Suisse, the A1 motorway and railway lines along the Arc Lémanique. The NStCM regional railway connects Nyon with Saint-Cergue and La Cure. The CGN boat landing is at Place du Molard; boat services and operations may vary seasonally.
