Luins lies in the lower part of the La CĂ´te wine-growing region and offers views of Lake Geneva. Vineyards, historic buildings and hiking trails give the village a range of distinctive features, from local history to tastings and routes through the surrounding area.

Village scenery and history

The church of Luins defines the village skyline, rising above the houses and vineyards. It offers panoramic views of the La CĂ´te AOC vineyards, Lake Geneva, Mont Blanc and the Alps. The nave and bell tower date from the 15th century and are Gothic. The Temple de Saint-Pierre was first mentioned in 1392; its last major restoration took place in 1952. The Temple is on the Huguenot memorial hiking trail.

A fortified house is also part of the village's history: one has been documented in Luins since 1315. The church and fortified house offer different historical reference points for understanding the village, without reducing them to the same period.

La CĂ´te AOC provides a broader framework for understanding the area's wine landscape. It is described as the largest wine-growing region in the canton of Vaud, stretching for about 45 kilometres from Geneva to Lausanne and covering around 2,000 hectares of vineyards. In Luins itself, the winemakers offer, among others, Chasselas, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Chenin, Sauvignon, GewĂĽrztraminer, Pinot Noir, Garanoir and Grenache.

Wines and tastings

The Château de Luins winery offers wines made according to Vaud tradition. The cellar houses six Palanche presses, installed there in the 1920s and still preserved. The winery's tasting room is traditionally called a “Carnotzet” and welcomes wine enthusiasts to taste its wines. Confirm the arrangements for visiting in advance.

Domaine Maison Dutruy welcomes visitors to its cellar to discover and taste its wines. Private tastings with a small platter of food can be arranged on request. A reservation is required; confirm availability and arrangements in advance.

Local wines can be tasted at the Caveau des Vignerons de Luins-Vinzel. From mid-February to mid-December, the Caveau is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as public holidays. Check the schedule before your trip. During the grape harvest, grape juice and fresh grape must are also available there; this offering depends on the harvest season.

Another event for wine enthusiasts is the cellar weekend hosted by winemakers from Begnins, Luins, Vinzel and Bursins. They open their cellars so visitors can discover Bourru: a new, still-fermenting wine with a low alcohol content. The tradition dates back to 1997. Check the dates before your trip.

Hiking trails by length and village connections

The Sentier des Châtaignes is a six-kilometre circular route designated trail no. 12. It connects Luins, Vinzel and Bursins, passes through the forest and runs along the upper edge of the vineyards. Along the way, there are views of the vineyards, the Alps and Lake Geneva. The trail has picnic and rest areas. In Luins, hikers can also use the Devens hut, built entirely of chestnut wood.

A wine-themed hike between Luins and Begnins is listed as approximately 5.5 kilometres long. Starting points include the Caveau des Vignerons de Luins or the centre of Begnins. Smartphone-based discoveries and games accompany the route. Another wine-themed route, called Vinzel–Luins–Bursins, is also approximately 5.5 kilometres long. It can be started at the Caveau, in the centre of Vinzel or in Bursins, and playfully introduces the area's history and products. Both routes are similar in length, but differ in the villages they connect and their starting points.

The wine-themed hikes in Luins and Vinzel use the free Vaud:Guide app. It sends notifications at each stage and offers quizzes, photo tasks and GPS activities. Check the app's availability and features before setting out.

If you're looking for a hotel in Luins, you can plan your stay around your interests: wine tastings, historic buildings or one of the different hiking routes. This lets you tailor your search to the things you want to experience locally.
