Prangins: Château, Kitchen Garden and Lake Geneva
Accommodation in Prangins
Prangins lies on the shores of Lake Geneva and offers panoramic views of the Alps. When planning your trip, you can choose from several different highlights: the Château and its museum, the historic kitchen garden, educational walking trails and the lakeside area at Promenthoux. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you would most like to plan for exhibitions, garden culture or time in the surrounding landscape.
The Château and the townscape
The Château de Prangins and its museum are considered cultural properties of national significance. The castle stands on a natural hill above Lake Geneva. The historic and commercial town centre is also part of the protected townscape: it is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Heritage Sites of National Importance (ISOS). A visit to Prangins can therefore take in not only the Château but also the history of the town centre.
The historic kitchen garden
The Potager at the Château de Prangins has been restored to its original form and is the largest historic kitchen garden in Switzerland. Covering 5,500 m², it grows almost 200 species and varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs and other useful plants found in the region in the 18th century, using organic farming principles. As a conservatory, the garden helps preserve old regional varieties and showcases the diversity of cultivated plants.
The kitchen garden is open year-round, admission is free, and an audio guide is available in three languages. The educational visitor programme also includes guided tours, workshops and events. Harvests are occasionally offered for tasting; this is a seasonal opportunity and is not guaranteed. A visit to the garden can therefore range from a walk among the plants to events with a specific focus on growing and harvesting.
Walking trails with different highlights
The Parcours didactique au cœur de Prangins is a circular route through the town centre, with five educational stops. Another named route is the Sentier didactique du Bois-des-Ages. The Promenade des Lumières offers a different focus: this discovery trail runs around the Château de Prangins and uses around twenty silhouettes associated with the Château to create an interpretive walk. Each silhouette features historical information and anecdotes in French, English and German.
The entire Promenade des Lumières is accessible free of charge at all times; when the museum is closed, two-thirds of the route remain accessible. The different formats help you choose: the circular route through the town centre has five stops, while the Promenade around the Château presents its explanations through silhouettes.
Exhibitions, workshops and a festival
The former reception rooms of the Château de Prangins—including the salon, dining rooms and libraries—provide the setting for an exhibition of around 600 historical objects. The exhibition “Indiennes. Un tissu à la conquête du monde” includes a study area where you can view textiles up close and explore the collection and printing techniques through an interactive multimedia experience. The Château offers families a fun and educational way to explore the exhibition in the form of a treasure hunt. As the on-site offering may be updated, check whether it is available before your visit.
The Centre des indiennes offers hands-on workshops where visitors can try dyeing techniques using plant-based dyes. Dates for individual workshops may vary. The Prangins Baroque festival may also be relevant when planning your trip: since it was founded in 2020, it has taken place every year, although individual editions and programmes vary. If you are travelling for the festival, check the dates for the edition you wish to attend.
Lakeshore and nature
The Plage de Promenthoux in Prangins has outdoor showers, toilets and a refreshment stand; picnics are allowed there. Facilities also include a launching point that is accessible to people with disabilities. If you are looking for a place to relax in nature rather than by the lakeshore, the forests of Prangins are just a few steps from the village centre. They offer a place to unwind and recharge.
