Discover Agarn
Accommodation in Agarn
Agarn is a municipality in the Leuk district, in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The village lies on an alluvial fan on the southern slope of the Rhone Valley. At 3,025 m above sea level, Bella Tola is the highest point in Agarn. For your stay, the village’s history, local agricultural themes and trails with different stated durations offer specific points of interest.
Village History and the Green Room
Local religious history includes Ignaz Hasler, who was born in Agarn in 1822, later returned there and served there from 1893 to 1917. Agarn had a village chapel. The establishment of its own rectory was intended to make it easier for residents to fulfil their religious duties. The village’s history also includes severe setbacks: Agarn was almost completely destroyed by fires twice, in 1799 and 1899.
The Green Room was created from the former Bayard estate. Sauerkraut is made there in the traditional way. The Green Room’s facilities, exhibitions and agricultural expertise provide the setting for events about agriculture for visitors and local residents. Courses, training sessions, exhibitions and talks about honeybees are offered in the barn. Alongside its trails, Agarn thus offers distinct themes centred on agriculture and honeybees.
Walks and Hikes
The “Meeting at the Trough” route brings three troughs along the village street to life through local water legends and anecdotes. The circular walk is about 400 m long, takes around 20 minutes and starts and finishes at the church in Agarn. It is accessible year-round and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
The Badger Trail takes considerably longer: this approximately three-hour circular hike starts in Agarn, passes through Unterems, heads towards Tuminen and Turtmann, and returns to Agarn. This gives you a choice between a short walk and a much longer hike, each with a stated duration.
Leukerfeld and Birdwatching
Leukerfeld, between Agarn and Susten, includes ponds and dry meadows and is notable for its ecological diversity. On the Leuk–Agarn hike, purpose-built observation huts in Leukerfeld are available for birdwatching. The route passes traditionally cultivated fields in Brentjong and crosses the rocky steppe, with Agarn as its destination.
The Susten–Leukerfeld–Agarn ornithological walks are also accessible year-round. May to September is considered the best time for birdwatching. While “Meeting at the Trough” features local water legends and anecdotes, these trails focus on birdwatching and the landscape of Leukerfeld.
“Zum Cher” Picnic Area
The “Zum Cher” picnic area lies above the village, in the direction of Aspstrasse. It is about a 15-minute walk from the village bus stop. Facilities include a fire pit with seating, tables with benches and a toilet. Check the latest access information before your visit, as access details may change.
