Ergisch: Suonen, Hiking Routes and Village History
Accommodation in Ergisch
Travelers who want to focus on mountain trails, a historic Suone and the village’s established character will find several points of interest in Ergisch. When choosing a route, the stated walking times and elevation gains matter, as do the different trail routes. Archaeological and church-history traces also give the village its own historical context.
Compare Hiking Routes by Duration and Course
The circular route R 34 Ergisch–Alpetjini–Wängerstäg–Töibuwald–Wasserleite–Ergisch is designated as a guided hike. It is 12.5 kilometers long, with a stated walking time of 4 hours and 15 minutes. It also involves 755 meters of ascent and 760 meters of descent. The trail climbs to Alpetjini via the Studentenweg, descends to the Turtmänna and returns to the starting point via the Ergisch water channel. Along the way, information panels provide details about eagles and an eagle’s nest.
The R 22 Turtmann–Unterems–Ergisch–Gampel-Steg is designated as a moderate hike. The stated walking time for the 10.2-kilometer route is 3 hours and 40 minutes; both the ascent and descent are 695 meters. By comparison, the R 34 is 2.3 kilometers longer and is estimated to take 35 minutes more. The R 22 offers views of the Rhône Valley and the surrounding peaks from open meadows. North of Ergisch, the route climbs again and passes through the well-preserved hamlets of Bränner and Lunggi.
These figures give a concrete indication of how long the two routes take, while each offers different landscape impressions. Conditions can change on mountain hikes, so check the current trail conditions before setting out.
Suonen, Forest Trails and Elevation Changes
On the guided tour “Suonen and Glacier Views in the Turtmanntal,” the first day’s hike begins in Ergisch after a shared train and bus journey. From there, the trail follows a varied Suone through larch forest to Hübschweidji. The first section is mostly wide, but also includes a few exposed stretches. Weather and trail conditions may vary; take this into account when planning.
The Ergisch and Riederu water channel also shapes the landscape. It is fed by the Turtmänna at an elevation of 1,300 meters. The water channel route begins in Ergisch at 1,086 meters and ends in Gampel-Steg at 631 meters. The construction history of the Ergisch Suone is also known: it was hewn into the rock in 1920. A walk along the Suone leads through green mountain meadows, and the trail continues into the forests of the Turtmanntal. The routes described therefore pass through both open meadows and wooded stretches.
Experience the Village and Its History
Old Valais houses, stables and barns are part of Ergisch’s village landscape. Archaeological finds reach further back in time: chance discoveries and remains uncovered during investigations attest to settlements in the municipality dating from the Iron Age and Roman period. Ergisch already had a chapel before 1548. In 1860, it became a parish in its own right; in 1861, it finally separated from the parish of Turtmann.
A visit to the Old Sawmill in Ergisch is another way to learn about local crafts: you can visit the sawmill and watch sawing demonstrations. Check visiting options in advance so you can include the visit in your plans without assuming fixed opening times.
Views and Village Life
From Ergisch, the view extends over numerous mountain ranges, the Rhône Valley and the mountain villages opposite. The agricultural landscape includes sheep, goats, Simmental cattle and Hérens cattle. The village also has its own shop, appreciated by residents and holiday guests alike. Together with its historic houses, hiking trails and Suone, these features present Ergisch as a place where both village history and the landscape take center stage.
