Oberems – Mountain Terrace above the Turtmann Valley
Accommodation in Oberems
Oberems lies on a mountain terrace at 1,335 m above sea level, at the entrance to the Turtmann Valley. The village is part of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park; from here, you can see the mountain ranges of the Bernese Alps on the opposite side. The landscape, village history and trails give a stay in Oberems a range of possible focuses. When planning, it helps to consider whether you want to hike, go snowshoeing in winter or discover the village’s culture.
Mountain trails and the village centre
The Gruben–Höhenpfad–Oberems hike leads from the Turtmann Valley to Oberems. The route has 800 metres of ascent and is rated as moderately difficult in technical terms. From Turtmann, you can reach the starting point by cable car, then continue by bus to Gruben. As the hike starts in Gruben and ends in Oberems, it is worth checking the relevant timetables before your hiking day. At the village entrance, the route passes an old sawmill. You can take a look inside if it is open; the trail also passes through the old village centre.
Another designated hike is the Bärenpfad Unterems–Oberems. It is 6.1 km long, with a stated duration of 2 hours 30 minutes, and is rated moderately difficult. It follows an old irrigation channel through a mixed forest. The distance and stated duration provide concrete guidance for planning your day; the route and conditions may change slightly. The two hikes therefore differ not only in their routes: for Gruben–Höhenpfad–Oberems, the ascent and technical difficulty are specified, while the Bärenpfad also lists its distance and duration.
Snowshoe trails and alpine scenery
The Oberems-Bort snowshoe trail is an easy circular route that starts and ends in the village. Along the way, it passes through the hamlets of Widubrunnu, Bielen, Mittelems and Bort; wooden houses and snow-covered roofs characterize the route. Winter conditions can affect whether the trail is passable, so check them before setting out. Another loop is the Oberems snowshoe trail: Saniklois and Ärdjuwald. It leads from the village past the Saniklois wayside shrine, along Griebjistrasse, through Ärdju and along Raaftstrasse, then back to Oberems through Holz. Dense forest and a viewpoint overlooking the mountain range on the opposite side of the valley make this trail a different route option.
The “Grand Canyon? Illgraben!” route leads from Oberems through several vegetation zones to the Obere Meretschialpe and its lakes. Alpine trails there pass lakes, rock glaciers and scree slopes, as well as colourful flower meadows. The changing landscape makes this route a distinct way to explore alpine terrain. As access in alpine terrain depends on conditions, it is advisable to check them before making specific plans.
Culture and village life
Sagu & Mili Oberems offers an interactive experience centred on woodworking and forestry throughout the year. The museum and exhibition were saved from falling into disrepair through renovation work by the Miis Dorf association. Since 2018, the association has worked with the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park on a new concept for the site and on completing its facilities. The experience thus brings together hands-on craftsmanship and the story of its renewal.
The old chapel is another cultural landmark in the village. It invites visitors to pause and is considered a quiet witness to centuries of religious history. Oberems also has a bread oven and village fountain. Practical amenities also help visitors find their way around: Oberems has a grocery shop selling fresh produce, a multi-purpose sports court, and a children’s playground with a barbecue and fire pit.
Plan your trip to Oberems
Regular regional trains on the Simplon line run to Turtmann. From there, Oberems can be reached by cable car or via a well-maintained road. If you are planning the hike from Gruben, you will also need to take the bus from the cable car station to reach the starting point. Check the timetables and conditions relevant to your route before you leave. This lets you match your travel arrangements and choice of hike to the respective starting and finishing points without combining the different trails into a single loop.
