Albinen: Historic Village and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Albinen
Albinen lies in the Valais Alps and is characterized by impressive natural scenery. The compact clustered village sits on a steep slope high above the Dala Gorge and is listed in the ISOS as a settlement of national importance. More than 200 wooden houses stand in the village center; the oldest date back to the 15th century. Their orientation also shapes the village’s appearance: the gables of all the residential houses face the valley, giving the village’s outward appearance a remarkable uniformity. A clustered village is a settlement form in which buildings are grouped closely together; in Albinen, the term suits the compact village center and its hillside location.
Village history and regional connections
Albinen is considered an old yet lively village and received the Raiffeisen Prize of the Upper Valais Heritage Society in 2018. The village is part of the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park. Nearby Leukerbad is a spa resort associated with bathing. These different themes can help with travel planning: Albinen for its townscape and hiking opportunities, and Leukerbad for its connection with bathing.
Egguweg: distance and season
The Egguweg passes 17 “Eggu” stations showcasing Albinen’s natural and cultural treasures. The complete circular route takes around two hours; the actual duration may vary depending on stops. The full route can be walked from mid-May to the end of October. In winter, the circular route is limited to ten “Eggu” stations in the village. If you include the two-hour walk in your day’s plans, allow time for stops.
Guided tour or hiking trail connection
If you would like to get to know Albinen through its lanes and sights, guided village tours take you through winding alleyways and show you the main attractions. The Egguweg passes 17 “Eggu” stations showcasing natural and cultural treasures; the guided village tour focuses on lanes and sights. Another hiking option is the Albinen ladders, which form a hiking trail connection between Leukerbad and Albinen. The connection includes eight well-maintained ladders at a height of around 100 meters. The practical difference from the Egguweg is the type of route: the ladders connect Albinen and Leukerbad, while the Egguweg is a circular route with stations. Even though the ladders are well maintained, it is advisable to check their current condition before setting out.
Winter activities above the village
Above the village is a groomed sledding run set amid the landscape. A winter holiday in Albinen also offers skiing on the slopes and sledding. High above the mountain villages of Albinen and Leukerbad, there are 50 kilometers of varied ski runs for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. For winter planning, the figures refer to different scales: the sledding run is above the village, while the 50 kilometers of ski runs are high above the mountain villages of Albinen and Leukerbad.
Finding your way at the village entrance
At the entrance to Albinen, a large parking lot is located just before the “Post” bus stop. If you use it as a landmark when arriving, bear in mind that parking conditions may change; check the latest situation before you travel.
