Unterschächen: Mountain scenery, hiking trails and culture
Accommodation in Unterschächen
Unterschächen is a municipality in the canton of Uri, located in the upper part of the Urner Schächental valley. Its striking alpine boundaries are formed to the north by the Schächentaler Windgellen peaks, to the east by the Klausen Pass, and to the south by Gross Windgällen, the Ruchen and the Schärhörner peaks. The Brunnital valley near Unterschächen is a designated wildlife protection area with alpine flora and fauna, framed by the north face of the Ruchen.
Mountain Scenery and Hiking Trails
At the southern end of the Brunnital valley lies the north face of the Ruchen, considered Europe’s largest continuous limestone wall. The Stäuben Waterfall near Äsch is another striking natural landmark: it is around 100 metres high. You can reach Äsch from Unterschächen on foot in just under an hour; this walking time is an estimate and may vary depending on conditions.
Unterschächen has around 95 kilometres of well-maintained, marked hiking trails. The Brunnital valley is a starting point for hikes and mountain tours. One specific route option is the hike from Unterschächen to Brunnialp, which is just under four kilometres long. Along the way, the trail passes the Bad Chapel, built in 1708. The animal quiz trail has 18 panels with animal puzzles. A trail from the Brunnital valley leads via the Alte Brunniweg and Alt Rüti to the lower station of the Sittlisalp cable car. It can be walked in either direction and offers puzzle fun for adults and children; check trail conditions locally.
For a longer alpine tour, distinguish the approximate time from the short hike to Brunnialp: the ascent through the steep slope of the Oberstafelplanggen to a viewpoint mountain on the south side of the Schächental valley takes around two hours. This estimate refers to the ascent. Take alpine conditions into account when planning.
Chapels and Local Heritage
The parish church of St. Theodul was built in 1681 and embellished with stucco and paintings in 1770. The ossuary chapel was consecrated in 1701. Its Baroque frescoes depict the seven deadly sins, the Last Judgement and the souls of the poor. The dates provide a specific historical context for the construction and decoration of the two churches.
The Bielen sawmill also combines technical and local history: the restored 19th-century sawmill is a working sawmill dating from 1850, powered by the Hinterschächen mountain stream and equipped with a waterwheel. An exhibition displays historic woodworking tools. Visits are possible by request from May to October; guided tours are by arrangement. Please arrange your visit in advance. The Alphütten Museum Oberalp is housed in a 200-year-old alpine hut and presents traditional alpine life.
Cable Car and Winter Activities
A public cable car connects Unterschächen Brunnital with Sittlisalp. The lower station is at 1,096 metres and the upper station at 1,615 metres. The Sittlisalp cable car at the entrance to the Brunnital valley takes visitors to the starting point of a moderately difficult ski tour; service may vary by season. Check operating information before travelling. The ascent for the ski tour and the roughly two-hour ascent through the Oberstafelplanggen are different tour options; plan each with the specific conditions in mind.
The Unterschächen cross-country ski trail is 6.5 kilometres long and groomed for both classic and skating techniques. It is lit daily from 18:15 to 21:00. As grooming and operation may depend on conditions, check the latest information before travelling. The Raiffeisen cross-country skiing centre is the starting point for the trail and has changing rooms, showers, toilets and a waxing room. If you need these facilities, confirm their availability in advance. The 80-metre-long Pinocchio children’s ski lift is in Schwand, south of the village, and is used to learn basic skiing skills.
Sittlisalp Alpine Dairy
The Sittlisalp alpine dairy offers guests a range of dairy products seasonally. Guided tours are available for groups of five or more and should be arranged in advance. Bear these conditions in mind when planning a visit or group tour.
