Bürglen: Tell Legends, Built Heritage and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Bürglen
Several themes are central to a trip to Bürglen: the Tell legend, historic buildings, pilgrimage sites and trails. You can plan your stay around your own interests, with time for culture in the village or for a longer route in the surrounding area.
Tell legends and the historic village center
The Tell Museum is housed in the Wattigwilerturm and has been operating there since 1966. Its collection includes more than 500 documents and objects relating to William Tell. It preserves historical, artistic and traditional depictions of the figure and the founding story of the Swiss Confederation. The museum also shows how the Swiss liberation tradition has changed and spread over the centuries; a multimedia film installation explores the cycle of the Swiss hero Tell.
The historic village center includes buildings dating from the 12th to the 19th century. These include the Baroque church complex of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul. The Tell Chapel was built in 1582 at the site where William Tell’s house is said to have stood. Its 1588 fresco cycle is among the oldest known Tell frescoes. On the church square, the Tell Fountain features a painted figure of Tell, created in 1786 by Einsiedeln sculptor Josef Benedikt Curiger.
Another focus of cultural history is the church treasury. The permanent “Church Treasury” exhibition covers six themes. Visits to the Bürglen parish hall are possible by appointment; guided tours are available on request.
Chapels and historic trails
The Chapel Trail connects Bürglen Parish Church with Riedertal Chapel, Loreto Chapel, Spiess Chapel and Tell Chapel. The route takes 4 hours and 20 minutes. Our Lady of Riedertal Chapel is considered the oldest pilgrimage site in the canton of Uri. When planning, the longer Chapel Trail is therefore a different time commitment from the shorter, approximately one-hour circular trails at Biel-Kinzig.
The trails toward Klausen Pass also tell the story of how the landscape was used in the past. The remains of the old mule track are important parts of a once significant historic transport route. An old path from Bürglen’s commercial district climbs past the church, leads by old farm buildings and a wayside chapel, and continues toward Klausen Pass. Check route information before setting out, as local details may change.
The Tell Educational Trail runs from the Tell Museum to the Tell Monument in Altdorf and presents the story of William Tell on eight illustrated panels. It thus complements Bürglen’s historic themes with a route that has a clearly named destination and a set number of stops.
Circular trails and lady’s-slipper orchids
The Gangbach Trail, also known as the Orchid Trail, is an approximately one-hour circular route that starts right at the Biel-Kinzig mountain station. During the flowering season, from late May to around late June and sometimes until mid-July, larger clusters of the yellow lady’s slipper orchid, which is strictly protected in Switzerland, can be seen along the trail. The exact flowering time varies with conditions; trail conditions and access may also change seasonally.
The Biel circular trail also starts at the Biel-Kinzig cable car’s mountain station and takes about an hour. Its stated elevation difference is 100 meters. Both routes therefore take about the same amount of time; the Biel circular trail also provides the elevation figure as an additional reference, while the Gangbach Trail offers the chance to see orchids in bloom during flowering season.
Winter at Biel-Kinzig
You can reach the Biel-Kinzig winter sports area from Bürglen Uri by cable car in about 15 minutes. Check travel times and operating conditions by season. The area offers well-groomed, varied pistes for carving and snowboarding. There are also ungroomed slopes for freeriding, as well as opportunities for ski touring with descents through powder snow. These winter activities depend on snow and avalanche conditions.
When choosing your travel dates, it makes a difference whether you mainly want to explore historic sites and longer trails, see the lady’s slipper orchids in bloom, or plan winter activities at Biel-Kinzig. Route duration, flowering season and seasonal operations provide concrete points of reference without specifying a particular level of hiking difficulty or guaranteeing current operations.
