Flüelen brings together historic buildings, nature and a range of ways to enjoy your stay. Cycling routes and boat trips add to the mix.

Flüelen is on the international Gotthard railway line. SGV paddle steamers call at the landing stage; their timetables vary by season and are subject to change. Check the timetable if you plan to include a boat trip in your itinerary.

Cultural history across several eras

Rudenz Castle was probably built in the early 13th century, just outside the village as it then stood. It was constructed as a fortified defensive tower, surrounded by moats, at the beginning of the Gotthard road. The castle has a public park; access to it may vary by season. A visit offers a chance to explore two different aspects of the site: the tower’s historic defensive function and the park’s use today.

The churches, too, reflect different periods of architecture and art. The Old Parish Church of St. George and Nicholas was consecrated on 16 November 1664. After the Jagdmatt Chapel in Erstfeld, dating from 1637/38, it is the first major surviving early Baroque church building in the canton of Uri. Paintings and stucco work from around 1758 form one of the highest-quality Rococo ensembles in Central Switzerland. The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus represents a later period: it is considered an exceptionally intact example of a complete sacred work of art from the late Art Nouveau period.

A former church in Flüelen also houses a rock crystal exhibition and is now used for a variety of purposes. As exhibition displays may change, it is advisable to check visiting options in advance. Those interested in cultural history will find another sacred site in contemporary use alongside the two parish churches.

The Reuss Delta and the lake as a natural environment

The Uri Reuss Delta is a nature and landscape conservation area of national importance. It lies on the Swiss Path between Flüelen and Seedorf. Wildlife and plant life are a particular draw for nature enthusiasts: in the Reuss Delta, you can observe swans, dragonflies, various species of duck, fish and Scottish Highland cattle, among others. A nature trail in the Schanz area of Seedorf offers the opportunity to experience and observe plants and animals at close range.

One specific rule applies when visiting the nature reserve: fires are permitted only at designated official fire pits. Water is also an integral part of the region’s natural landscape. Thirty fish species have been recorded in Lake Lucerne, including Balchen, whitefish, lake trout, pike and perch, also known as Egli.

Flüelen has a public beach at the Gruonbach. The lido there was built in the 1920s. Swimming conditions and access may vary, so it is a good idea to check before planning a swim. This lets you include a visit to the beach in your itinerary without assuming it is available in the same way all year round.

Cycling routes and paragliding

Flüelen is on two national and two local cycling routes of Veloland Switzerland. If you are planning a cycling tour, check the current route alignment, as routes may be adjusted. Cycling can also be part of a stay in Flüelen, alongside culture and nature.

For paragliding, the Eggberge offer a launch platform with views of Lake Uri and the Alpine panorama. A landing site is located on the Flüeler Allmend, a ten-minute walk from the cable car. Launch conditions and regulations may change; check the applicable conditions before flying. The launch platform and landing site provide specific guidance for planning a paragliding trip.
