Accommodation in Erstfeld
Erstfeld lies in the Reuss Valley and has been shaped by its railway heritage. There are several ways to explore during your stay: in the village and at the depot, you can discover the history of the Gotthard Railway, while marked trails lead into the Erstfeld Valley and the surrounding mountain landscape. Geological features and historic buildings are also part of the village’s character.
Geology, Moorland and Mountains
The Scheidnössli near Erstfeld is BLN site 1610, a geological natural monument. It is home to an easily accessible tectonic contact zone between the crystalline Aar Massif and its sedimentary cover. Lake Fulensee in Erstfeld is registered as ML site 110 and is part of the diverse high-alpine moorlands; glacial landforms can be found in the Kargebiet area.
In the Erstfeld Valley, the municipality extends up to the summits of Kleiner Spannort at 3,140 metres and Grosser Spannort at 3,198 metres. Large parts of the area are shaped by the valley and the surrounding mountain ranges. At the end of the Erstfeld Valley, the SAC Krönten Hut sits at 1,903 metres in an alpine high moor. The landscape around the hut is characterised by its plant life, streams, waterfalls, rock formations and several mountain lakes.

For a longer outing, the trail from Erstfeld railway station leads through the Erstfeld Valley to the SAC Krönten Hut; the walking time is about four hours. This approximate duration is a separate planning consideration and does not indicate the level of difficulty. The route and walking time may depend on conditions and route status. Erstfeld is also a starting point for various ski tours in the Erstfeld Valley, on Bälmeten and on Gross Spannort. Conditions on these winter tours depend heavily on snow, avalanche and weather conditions.
The Gotthard Railway and Historic Buildings
The village’s railway history can also be seen at specific sites. The lime kiln in Rynächt was the first construction project of the Gotthard Railway on Erstfeld soil; the kiln is covered by rock. Jagdmatt Chapel dates from 1638 and is considered the first early Baroque building in the canton of Uri. Together with the trail, these sites reveal different aspects of the village’s history.
The historic Gotthard mountain railway line is still in operation. Check current connections before travelling. SBB Historic offers groups discovery tours of the depot in Erstfeld; check availability before booking. The depot can be visited from April to October on the first Saturday of each month.
