Hospental – Village History in the Ursern Valley
Accommodation in Hospental
Hospental lies in the south of the canton of Uri in the Ursern Valley, between Andermatt and Realp, at the confluence of the Furkareuss and Gotthardreuss rivers. The municipality consists of the village of the same name, laid out along a road, and the former Walser settlement of Zumdorf. The village has a PostBus stop and a regional train station served by the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway on the route from Andermatt to Brig. Main roads 2 (Gotthard Pass road) and 19 (Furka Pass) also run through Hospental. When looking for a hotel in Hospental, the historic buildings and the village’s seasonal appeal are two practical considerations for deciding what kind of trip to plan.
Tower and Village History
The tower of the Lords of Hospental was built in the first half of the 13th century and is one of more than 50 buildings in Uri that are designated as sites of national importance. It is open around the clock all year; weather-related restrictions apply. The tower includes a publicly accessible viewing platform with spectacular panoramic views. This brings a medieval fortified tower and a viewpoint together in one place. In January 2023, Hospental was officially named one of Switzerland’s most beautiful villages.
Churches, Chapels and Wooden Houses
The Baroque parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built between 1706 and 1708; its altars are richly decorated. The Chapel of St. Charles dates from 1721 and was renovated in the Neo-Baroque style in 1907. In Zumdorf, the Chapel of St. Nicholas originally dates back to 1591; it was renovated in the Baroque style in 1758. These examples illustrate the distinction between different phases of construction and renewal: an original construction date and a later renovation tell different stories. The village centre also has numerous timber block houses built after the village fire of 1669. They complement the religious buildings with a reminder of the village’s reconstruction after the fire.
Village Tour and the History of the Pass
Hospental is one of the places whose history is covered by village tours in the Ursern Valley. The tour includes the medieval fortified tower, several historic inns and the era when mules and carriages travelled over the Gotthard Pass. In this way, the tour places individual buildings in the wider historical context of traffic over the pass. If you would like to take part, book online at least two days in advance; the tour depends on guide availability.
Cross-Country Skiing and Seasonal Travel Planning
In winter, the groomed cross-country ski trail network in the Ursern Valley runs from Andermatt through Hospental to Realp. It offers routes for both classic and skating styles and covers 32 kilometres; the length depends on the route configuration at the time. Grooming and opening are seasonal. So when planning, consider both your preferred style and the route and season in question. In summer, Hospental is particularly well suited to scenic drives over the passes. This means that cross-country skiing in winter and drives over the passes in summer are two distinct seasonal attractions of the village.
Geology Above the Village
A lens-shaped serpentinite deposit lies on the southern slope above Hospental. Talc zones flank it; gneiss of the Gotthard Massif completely surrounds it.
