Vico Morcote combines a historic village centre with church art and hiking trails. The municipality lies at an altitude of over 400 metres on a promontory on the southern slope of Monte Arbostora, below Alpe Vicania. From there, the view extends to Lake Ceresio and Monte S. Giorgio. Vico Morcote is in the Canton of Ticino, in the Paradiso district and the Lugano region.

Lanes, Arcades and Local History

In the old village centre, narrow lanes and houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries shape the streetscape. Some of the lanes run beneath arcades. Covered passageways connect parts of the village centre at the same level and are among the defining features of its historic character. As you stroll through the lanes, you will encounter both the narrow paths between the houses and the covered passageways.

The history of the village dates back to Roman times; Vico Morcote was first mentioned in 1022 under the name Vico Morcao. Until 1588, it was politically united with Morcote. These milestones distinguish the early mention from the later political union and provide a historical context for the village centre.

Churches and Historic Spaces

The parish church of Vico Morcote is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00; admission is free for worshippers and visitors. As opening hours should be checked locally before your visit, it is advisable to confirm them again. For a cultural walking tour, the church can be combined with the village’s historic buildings and lanes.

The Church of Saints Fedele and Simone is a 17th-century reconstruction of a medieval sanctuary, some parts of which have been preserved. Above the sacristy door is a 15th-century carved marble triptych depicting the Madonna and two saints, attributed to the Rodari of Maroggia. The Sala della Giustizia is also part of the village’s history: it is located in the former town hall and is associated with local judicial autonomy. Its painted frieze displays the coats of arms of the twelve cantons that governed the Baliaggio di Lugano.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The Sentiero dei Sensi was created so that you can experience nature through smell, hearing, taste, sight and touch. The trail offers views of Lake Ceresio and passes through a varied landscape. It is considered peaceful and easy to walk, and suitable for people of all ages; trail conditions may vary from person to person.

A hiking trail to Vico Morcote starts at Via al Doyro in Melide and leads to Vico Morcote. Several exits are located in the Cantine di fondo area on the road between Melide and Morcote. The Sentiero Lago di Lugano is a different trail, which includes a hike from Monte San Salvatore to Vico Morcote. The route descriptions therefore refer to different starting points and highlights: the Sentiero dei Sensi focuses on experiencing nature and lake views, while the other information describes specific routes and destinations.

Choosing Vico Morcote as a Travel Destination

If you are considering a hotel stay in Vico Morcote, think about whether the historic village centre and its churches or one of the differently described hikes is more important for your trip. For trails with starting or finishing points outside the village, it is worth checking how they fit with your planned itinerary. This will help you match the destination’s cultural and scenic attractions with the trail information relevant to your trip.
