Ticino is Switzerland’s southernmost canton and lies almost entirely south of the Alps. Its landscape combines alpine and Mediterranean natural environments: Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano and a deeply varied alpine landscape are all part of the picture. Lakes, mountains and valleys therefore stand out as distinct focuses for planning a trip. The canton also has a distinctive linguistic profile: Italian is its only official language.

Landscape, valleys and forest reserve

The wooded, pyramid-shaped Monte San Giorgio rises above Lake Lugano. The mountain is best known for its fossils: it is considered the world’s most important fossil record of marine life from the Triassic period, 245 to 230 million years ago. The finds also include terrestrial reptiles, insects and plants. The mountain thus combines a striking landform with an exceptional glimpse into Earth’s history.

The valleys also help shape how visitors find their way around Ticino. The Ticino Valley (Valle Ticino), Verzasca Valley and Maggia Valley are among the canton’s longest and deepest valleys. By contrast, the ancient beech forests take center stage in Valle di Lodano: they form a unique forest reserve and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A well-developed network of hiking trails makes it possible to explore the forest reserve. Travelers who want to balance nature and culture when planning a trip will find a wide range of themes within the same canton, without having to combine them into a single excursion.

Fossils, castles and living traditions

In Bellinzona, Castel Grande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro are open to visitors; their museums can also be visited. The Bellinzona fortifications, with their three castles, ramparts and Murata, have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since November 30, 2000. The Via Gottardo hiking route begins in Bellinzona with a tour of the castles. This gives the city a clear role in the itinerary as the starting point for this route.

The Holy Week processions in Mendrisio, documented since the second half of the 17th century, offer another expression of cultural heritage. During the processions, the streetlights are turned off; painted, translucent canvases cast a subdued light across the lanes. Those interested in regional traditions will find a distinctive interplay of procession and illuminated surroundings here.

A visit to the gardens on the Brissago Islands goes hand in hand with a boat trip: the visit includes a boat ride from Ascona to the island. The Botanical Garden covers 2.5 hectares and features plant life from many parts of the world. The garden’s size and international variety of plants give the visit a different focus from the canton’s mountain and forest landscapes.

Choose excursions based on your time and interests

Four excursions have been created in Valle di Lodano. Two can be completed in a day; the other two each take two days, with the option of staying overnight at the hut near Alp da Canaa. This information helps you estimate how much time an excursion will take without treating the hikes as interchangeable. For planning your own trip, the difference between the one-day and two-day options is especially relevant.

BoBosco offers another way to combine hiking with a playful element. The two forest trails run along the Verzasca and are 9.8 kilometers long in total. The first section runs for 5.5 kilometers from Brione Verzasca to Lavertezzo and includes 13 play stations. The boccia course, built entirely of chestnut wood, makes hiking a nature experience and is also interesting for children. The specific length of the first section and its play stations distinguish this option from the excursions in Valle di Lodano, where duration is the main consideration.

Swissminiatur in Melide offers a different focus for an excursion. This family-friendly attraction covers 14,000 square meters and displays more than 120 scale models of famous Swiss landmarks. It also has a 3,560-meter-long network of miniature railways. This makes it possible to choose between nature trails, historic sites and miniature representations of Swiss architecture based on their genuinely different themes.

Plan a hotel stay in Ticino to suit your trip

When looking for a hotel in Ticino, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: mountain and forest landscapes, castles and history, or excursions with a clear time frame? The canton also offers information on hikes and cycling routes as regional outdoor activities. Regional flavors, local products and a diverse food scene are also part of Ticino’s character, without implying any particular dish or specific tasting experience.
