You can plan your time in the area around the things that matter to you.

Historic architecture in Sigirino and Osignano

Sigirino was first mentioned in 1335 under the name Sezelino. A church is already referred to in a document from 1292. The monumental complex of the Church of Sant’Andrea di Sigirino has been protected by the Office of Cultural Heritage since 2007. After almost ten years of restoration work, the parish church was returned to the community in December 2016. The complex is strongly Baroque in character; above the church’s altar is a statue of the Regina dei Martiri, dating to around 1693.

The dates mark different historical reference points: a church is mentioned in a document from 1292, Sigirino appears under the name Sezelino in 1335, and the parish church was returned to the community in 2016 after restoration work. The cultural highlights therefore span different scales: the monumental Sant’Andrea complex and the history of the settlement.

Osignano is a compact historic settlement divided into two structurally distinct parts. Its historic network of routes includes narrow lanes, steps, arcades and small courtyards, as well as gardens supported by stone walls. Osignano is still considered a striking example of rural Ticino architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. The cantonal structure plan and the ISOS inventory designate the settlement as being of national importance.

Possible medieval fortifications with towers are suspected in the lower part of the village and in the Castellaccio area. No visible remains survive today. This cautious description distinguishes the suspected fortifications from the surviving elements of the historic route network and the buildings mentioned above.

Monte Barro: scenery and themed trail

Monte Barro is a 650-metre-high hill between Sigirino and Torricella. Four native oak species grow there; the Patriziato di Sigirino describes this occurrence as unique in Switzerland. The 600-metre-long themed trail, with its numerous panoramic seating areas, offers another way to experience the hill. The oak species provide a botanical focus, while the trail’s length and seating areas describe its character. You can take these two aspects into account as separate nature interests when planning your visit.
