Melide can be explored through a range of themes: its almost two-kilometre-long lakeside promenade, historic town centre and Swissminiatur each reveal a different side of the town. Trains, post buses and boat services are part of the public transport network. Check the timetable for the day of your trip to find the connection that suits you best.

Lakeside Promenade and Trails

Melide’s lakeside promenade is almost two kilometres long. The stretch from Melide to Bissone continues southwest towards the Cantine area. The Percorso Ponte Diga is accessible at all times and runs along the lakeside promenade to Bissone, with regularly spaced information panels. Historic images and explanations of the key events that led to the bridge’s construction also make the route an introduction to the town’s history.

The Sentiero per Vico Morcote starts at Via al Doyro and leads to Vico Morcote. At first, it follows the same route as a Vita-Parcours, passing through clearings with views of the landscape and lake. In some places, the trail is narrow and rocky. The more challenging Sentiero per Carona takes a different route: it starts at Via Carona, leads to Carona and can be continued from there towards Monte San Salvatore. The routes therefore differ both in their character and in their destinations.

Cycling is another consideration when planning your trip: with bike sharing, you can ride along the cycle path towards Bissone, along Monte Arbostora towards Morcote, or over the Forca di S. Martino towards Paradiso. The station is located between Swissminiatur and the sports ground. As routes and services may change, check the latest information before setting off.

Historic Centre and Building History

The Nucleo centrale forms Melide’s historic centre. Narrow lanes and small squares, known as the Contrade, connect Piazza Domenico Fontana with the cantonal road. The shady, cool lanes and the links between the different parts of the town centre give the walk its distinctive layout.

The parish church of Chiesa dei SS. Quirico e Giulitta brings together several eras: archaeological finds point to origins in the 6th or 7th century, while its present appearance took shape in the 17th century. The apse contains a 16th-century fresco of the Assumption of Mary between the patron saints. The Renaissance portal, made of marble and granite, is attributed to Marsilio Fontana. During the restoration from 1985 to 1994, modern liturgical furnishings and an innovative Way of the Cross made of wood and Plexiglas by Gianfredo Camesi were added.

The Cantine are also part of the town’s history. They probably date back to the 18th century and were used to store and preserve wines that were traded. Wine and food were kept in cool cellars; the buildings above them sometimes housed meeting places and restaurants, where, among other things, fish from the lake was served.

Swissminiatur and Practical Information

Swissminiatur features more than 130 Swiss buildings, monuments and modes of transport as models at a scale of 1:25. The park also has a 3,560-metre model railway network with 18 trains, as well as boats, cable cars and funiculars. In the workshop, craftspeople make and restore miniatures using materials and techniques that allow for particularly realistic details.

The Quiz di Rudy quiz trail comprises 15 questions about Switzerland and its sights. There is a play area for younger visitors. Swissminiatur is on level ground and has no architectural barriers; if needed, check for updated accessibility information before your trip. Melide railway station is about 200 metres away. The journey from Lugano takes seven minutes. Check connections for your travel date, as journey times may be updated.

Swimming, Sports and Food

Lido Comunale offers direct access to the lake. Facilities include a children’s pool with a slide, a floating pool in the lake and an inflatable water park. Swimming facilities are seasonal. There is also a multi-purpose sports court for football, basketball and volleyball. At Piazza Domenico Fontana, the Isola dei Pirati playground features water- and harbour-themed play equipment centred around a large multi-purpose sailing ship.

The Tennis Club Melide on Lungolago Mario Gallino has three clay courts, a bar with a lakeside terrace and changing rooms. Tennis lessons can be booked by reservation; during the season, the club organises tournaments and other activities. Check the booking arrangements in advance.
