Rovio: Frescoes, Old Town and Views to Monte Generoso
Accommodation in Rovio
Rovio is a locality in the municipality of Val Mara in the Swiss canton of Ticino. From Rovio, views stretch across Lake Lugano to Monte Generoso; the surrounding area is characterised by lush vegetation. The old town preserves notable buildings that open onto squares and cobbled streets. Roman tombs can also be seen in the town centre, where they have been repurposed as bathing facilities at the fountains.
Churches, Frescoes and Paintings
San Vigilio dates from the first half of the 11th century and is an example of Romanesque architecture in the Sottoceneri region. The church stands on a secluded hill with sweeping views west of Rovio. Its apse is entirely decorated with frescoes from the first half of the 13th century, which show a strong Byzantine influence. San Vigilio thus brings together an early Romanesque origin and a later, extensive painted decoration.
The parish church of Santi Vitale e Agata also dates back to the 11th century. Among its artworks is an altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion, created by Giovanni Carlone in 1614. The oratory of Madonna del Carmelo is also known as Santa Maria Assunta or Gesiola. It was founded in the late Middle Ages and extensively remodelled during the Baroque period; a 15th-century fresco depicts the Madonna nursing the Child. The different dates offer a glimpse into several periods of religious art in Rovio.
Historic Houses and Contemporary Photography
The late Neoclassical Palazzo Bagutti was built in 1864 and has several rooms decorated with 19th-century paintings. On Piazza dal Torc stands Casa Carlone, with a living room painted by Giovanni Carlone between 1695 and 1700. These dates point to different periods in the town’s history: late 17th-century painting and a 19th-century palazzo.
Another highlight is CasaGalleria.ART, a creative and exhibition centre for contemporary photography. Its range includes analogue works, street art, live works incorporating augmented reality, and photographic compositions. By reservation, CasaGalleria.ART offers art-and-nature experiences, including a studio visit with the artist, an artist portrait, a workshop on night photography of flowers in Rovio’s garden, and special street-art experiences with Yuri Catania.
Tastings and Regional Products
At CasaGalleria.ART, you can enjoy an aperitif or lunch featuring seasonal local produce, paired with regional Merlot wines. Vini Rovio offers guided tastings of Ticino wines with local cured meats and cheeses by prior arrangement. A tasting lasts about 90 minutes and is intended for at least two people. When planning, keep in mind that advance booking is required, as well as the approximate duration and minimum group size.
Trails and Getting There
The Sentiero Gianola runs between Rovio and the summit of Monte Generoso. Check trail conditions before setting out. From Rovio, a short footpath also leads towards Cascata del Botto, a waterfall that is 68 metres high. These details offer two different ways to explore during a stay in which the landscape is as much a part of the experience as the town’s history.
