Leventina: Mountain Lakes, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Leventina
Leventina includes the Valle Leventina and the Val Bedretto. The Leventina Valley stretches south from Airolo at the Gotthard Pass to Biasca; the Ticino River runs through the valley. From north to south, the landscape changes from coniferous forests and alpine conditions to an almost Mediterranean plain with vineyards. The Piottino and Biaschina gorges divide the region into Upper, Middle and Lower Leventina. As a north-south transit region, it was shaped by the old Gotthard road, the Gotthard railway and the A2 motorway; the south portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel is located in Bodio.
Hiking Trails, Mountain Lakes and Elevation Changes
More than 650 kilometers of hiking trails in Leventina range from easy valley-floor walks to technically demanding summit hikes. The Strada Alta Leventina is a panoramic high-altitude trail that leads from Airolo toward Biasca. For views of mountain lakes, Val Piora offers a different focus: the Ritom funicular provides access to a plateau of lakes, including Lago Ritom and other mountain lakes. It connects Piotta at 1,010 meters with Piora at 1,796 meters in about twelve minutes. Its maximum gradient is 87.8 percent. The funicular was built in 1917 and opened to passengers in 1921. As schedules vary by season, check the timetable valid for your travel dates.
The path from the Ritom Hut crosses the dam, follows Lago Ritom along a gravel road and then climbs to Lago Tom. Marmots can be seen along the trail seasonally. From the route at Lago Tom, Lago Cadagno can be reached by continuing for about another 30 minutes. Trail conditions can vary. This outing combines a clearly described sequence of dam, lakeside path and ascent with the option of exploring the lake landscape on a further leg.
Geology and Winter Activities
The geotourism trail offers two different routes: the gentler Tremorgio route runs along the lake of the same name, while the more demanding Campolungo route leads into alpine terrain. Along the Campolungo trail, you can see crystalline rocks, marine sediments and white veins of dolomite marble. The section reaches an altitude of 2,250 meters at Capanna Leìt. The two routes offer different highlights: at Tremorgio, the lake is the main attraction; at Campolungo, it is the alpine trail and its geological features. Conditions in the mountains can vary.
In winter, Airolo-Pesciüm offers more than 30 kilometers of ski and snowboard runs between altitudes of 1,175 and 2,250 meters, as well as more than 27 kilometers of snowshoe trails. Athletes train and perform in the aerials and moguls disciplines at the Raiffeisen Freestyle Arena in Pesciüm; the sports program may change. Cross-country ski trails are available in Bedretto, Prato Leventina and Dalpe. In Prato Leventina, they are illuminated in the evening. These seasonal activities offer a different focus from the hiking trails and mountain lakes of the warmer months.
Local History and Culture
Giornico is considered the best-preserved village in Leventina. Old stone houses and cobbled streets define the village; two arched bridges cross the Ticino. The Museo di Leventina is housed in Casa Stanga. A modern, interactive permanent exhibition explores the valley’s history, identity and culture. The collection includes popular religious traditions, sacred art, domestic life, crafts and transport, among other subjects. Documents from the 19th century cover emigration and immigration, the construction of the Gotthard railway, and livestock farming and agriculture.
A guided tour of Giornico includes the Church of San Nicola, considered one of the finest Romanesque examples in Ticino. The tour also crosses Romanesque bridges connecting the only inhabited island in the Ticino River, then visits the remains of an old castle and the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria with its frescoes. It ends at the monument to the Battle of Sassi Grossi in 1478. Tour availability may vary; check the dates in advance.
Dazio Grande also connects history with present-day visits: for several centuries, the site served as a customs post on the north-south Gotthard route and is now a rest stop and cultural venue. The Fondazione Dazio Grande organizes events there; the program may change. Locanda Dazio Grande offers dining options. In Faido, a Belle Époque tour passes old hotels and villas or follows the scenic Sentiero dei Lazzaroni. For this tour, too, you should confirm availability before your trip.
Activities and Culinary Stops
For mountain biking, Airolo Bike is a 21-kilometer route of moderate difficulty. It includes a one-kilometer singletrack through natural landscapes; trail conditions may vary. Another option for outdoor activity is the 13-kilometer Strada degli Alpi Bedretto between Airolo and Ronco, at an altitude of about 1,700 to 1,800 meters. The route includes a stop at Alpe Cristallina at 1,800 meters, where fresh cheese produced on site is available seasonally. From Ronco, travelers can return to Airolo by post bus; check the timetable for your travel dates.
Choose the themes that matter most to you for your trip: mountain trails and lakes, winter activities, local history, or a route with a culinary stop. These different highlights give you practical guidance for planning your stay in Leventina.
