Hiking in the Valle Leventina

The “Di chiesa in chiesa sopra la Valle Leventina” hiking route starts in Bodio TI. Hiking trails from Bodio also lead to the Strada alta della Leventina near Sobrio. So the area offers both a named route starting point and trails in the direction of Sobrio. If you are planning a hike, check current trail conditions in advance.

A cultural and historical route through the Valle Leventina follows a historic path with paved sections, stairs, bridges and rural buildings. These features give a concrete impression of the route’s character; check current conditions before setting out. Near Monda, a short detour from the path leads to a waterfall. In the same area, a route crosses an old Roman bridge over the River Ticino and then reaches the village centre of Giornico.

Church history and architecture

The parish church of Santo Stefano combines Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Baroque architectural elements. The terms refer to different styles: Neo-Romanesque elements draw on Romanesque forms, while Neo-Baroque ones are inspired by the Baroque. The building’s history also spans several periods. The first documented mention of the church dates from 1227. It was destroyed by a landslide in the 15th century. The bell tower was built in 1776; between 1856 and 1857, the main building was extensively altered and took on its present appearance.

Another church-history site is the Chiesetta di San Felice in Gesora in Bodio. The town’s history is also linked to a well-known figure: Bodio is the birthplace of Stefano Franscini.

Monteforno and its industrial heritage

The Monteforno steelworks operated in Bodio in the Valle Leventina from 1946 to 1994. It is part of the town’s economic, industrial and social history and is considered one of Ticino’s most important industrial enterprises. Its name comes from Pizzo Forno, a 2,907-metre-high mountain visible to the north from Bodio. The history of the steelworks thus brings together industry and a striking name from the surrounding mountains.

The old Biaschina power station in Bodio is also considered architecturally significant. Timber rafting offers another historical perspective: the so-called “fosso” served as a partly artificial basin where tree trunks were collected and prepared for transport. The trunks were tied together to form small rafts and then floated down the River Ticino. This describes a specific work process in which the basin, timber and river worked together.
