Lavorgo lies at an altitude of 615 metres on the valley floor of the Leventina, at the upper end of the Biaschina Gorge. When planning a trip, the main attractions are hiking trails, cultural history and nature: a circular trail starts in Lavorgo, as does a stage of the ViaGottardo. Other highlights include the chapel of Santa Petronilla, the Cascata Gribbiasca waterfall and the Piottino power station. You can choose Lavorgo based on whether you would prefer to spend your time hiking or exploring its buildings and local history.

Hiking between a circular trail and a long-distance route

The Lavorgo–Calonico–Rossura–Chiggiogna–Lavorgo circular trail passes through Calonico, Rossura and Chiggiogna before returning to Lavorgo. It includes a historic connecting path between Lavorgo and Calonico. The loop is listed as having 520 metres of elevation gain and taking around four hours.

A partly paved mule track to Calonico begins at the chapel of Santa Petronilla. It passes through chestnut forests and pastures, offering another hiking option with a specific starting point in Lavorgo.

The ViaGottardo stage starts in Lavorgo and ends in Biasca. At 21 kilometres, 6 hours and 25 minutes, and 840 metres of ascent, it is the longer of the two described routes. The details for the circular trail and the stage will help you estimate how much time to allow for your plans. Check current trail conditions before setting out; seasonal conditions may affect access to the ViaGottardo stage.

Chapel, waterfall and industrial heritage

The chapel of Santa Petronilla in Lavorgo is a Baroque building with a barrel vault, built in 1662. Older buildings may have stood there before. A barrel vault is a ceiling with a continuous curved shape running lengthwise. The partly paved mule track to Calonico also starts at the chapel and passes through chestnut forests and pastures.

The Cascata Gribbiasca waterfall lies between Chiggiogna and Lavorgo. After heavy rain, it carries particularly large volumes of water and displays its full force. Water levels and safe conditions for viewing may depend on the weather; high water levels can make it difficult to view the waterfall safely.

The Piottino power station was built between 1928 and 1932 to a design by Milanese architect Giovanni Greppi, in the early 20th-century Lombard industrial style. A railway bridge built in 1929 connects the power station across the Ticino River to Lavorgo station. The bridge is used mainly as a footpath. The history of the railway station is also part of the town’s development: Lavorgo got a Gotthard Railway station in 1882, after which the main settlement shifted.
