Gorduno – Hiking and History in Ticino
Accommodation in Gorduno
Gorduno is a district of the municipality of Bellinzona in the Swiss canton of Ticino. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Gorduno, the area’s highlights can help guide your travel plans: hikes to Alpe Arami and buildings with medieval history shape local travel interests. This lets you choose your destination based on whether you would prefer to experience alpine scenery, historic sites, or both.
Hiking and Alpine Scenery
Alpe Arami is a small alpine pasture in the mountains above Gorduno. At an altitude of 1,500 m, a spectacular terrace offers views of the Bellinzona area and the Riviera. Baita Arami is located in Gorduno, in the municipality of Bellinzona, at an altitude of 1,456 m. It welcomes visitors to a spectacular terrace at the foot of Gaggio.
From Baita Arami, you can hike to Capanna Albagno, follow various local trails, and take the Via Alta della Verzasca. The “Trekking verso la Capanna Albagno” hike passes over Alpe Arami and then descends to Gorduno. Check trail conditions before setting out. The access route is also worth noting: the Baita Arami car park is accessible by car, and it is a ten-minute walk from there to the hut. Local road and parking conditions may change.
Castle and Churches: Local History
The ruins of a medieval castle are located near San Carpoforo in Gorduno. Archaeological investigations on the crest of the castle hill uncovered the remains of an early medieval circular wall and the base of a tower. Gorduno Castle may have been destroyed or dismantled following the victory at Arbedo in 1422.
The church of SS. Carpoforo e Maurizio stands on the hill north of Gorduno. Restoration excavations carried out from 1994 to 1997 revealed that the first religious building dates from the 7th or 8th century and belonged to a small fortified complex. The choir contains heavily reworked medieval frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of the patron saints.
Another building is the Chiesa dei SS. Rocco e Sebastiano, an imposing longitudinal building with a choir and a bell tower crowned by a pyramidal roof. The architrave of the Renaissance portal bears a bas-relief of the Madonna with the patron saints. Inside are fragments of Late Gothic frescoes that may be attributed to the Seregnesi workshop. The two churches offer contrasting points of interest: here, the architecture and portal shape the view, while there, early building history and reworked frescoes take center stage.
Regional Cuisine and Traditions
Culinary offerings are also among the places of interest described here. Baita Arami offers visitors regional products. In Gorduno’s historic center, Ristorante Antichi Sapori serves pasta and fish, as well as a selection of wines from Ticino and Italy; the menu may change. Cantina Magiro offers tastings and dinners by prior reservation.
A recurring cultural tradition is the Three Kings custom in the Bellinzona area, renewed each year during the days of Epiphany. In Gorduno and Galbisio, the Gruppo dei Tre Re walks through the streets on the eve of Epiphany, going from house to house and singing a verse of the traditional Three Kings song. The range of travel interests thus extends from a mountain hike to architectural history and local customs.
