Accommodation in Cadenazzo
Cadenazzo offers a range of themes, from a historic mill and a culturally focused hiking trail to cycling and freestyle sports. You can plan your trip around what interests you most locally: local history, transport routes or outdoor activities.
The mill and transport routes as cultural themes
The Antico Mulino e pesta del Precassino is open to residents, tourists and schools. The historic complex consisted of a mill with millstones and a stamping mill with two mortars. Together, the two parts offer a vivid insight into different milling and pounding processes.
On 16 May 2026, the Antico Mulino del Precassino took part in the annual Swiss Mill Day for the second year in a row. On this occasion, mills across Switzerland open their doors to visitors. The 2026 date has passed; Mill Day is described as an annual event.
Hiking on the Via del Ceneri
The Via del Ceneri is an educational hiking trail with a cultural focus. It runs from Passo del Ceneri at Piazza Ticino to Cadenazzo railway station. Along the way, informative and educational panels explain the history of the villages and forests of Ceneri. The route thus combines hiking with insights into the development of settled places and their forest landscapes.
The history of transport is also part of this trail: a motorway underpass tunnel was converted into a gallery that traces three centuries of transport history and development. Together with the panels, this gives the trail a cultural focus that takes in not only the natural surroundings but also the changes to transport routes.
Mountain biking and freestyle
The Ceneri Bike mountain bike route runs from Cadenazzo railway station via the Pedemontano cycle path No. 311 to Sant’Antonino. On the way to Monti dei Bassi, it reaches an easy forest road that passes through a chestnut forest and an arboretum. After Robasacco, the route continues through the chestnut forest of Pontiva to the Monte Ceneri military area. Signposting and conditions may vary; check both before setting out.
The Freestyle Park Ticino in Cadenazzo is a separate attraction: it promotes BMX, skateboarding and scootering. The facility is Olympic-sized and has already hosted several European and Swiss BMX freestyle championships. While Ceneri Bike focuses on the route and landscape, the park’s three freestyle sports and competition history define its theme.
Cadenazzo’s history and landscape
The history of the parish is also part of local history: until 1442, Cadenazzo belonged to the parish of Bellinzona; in 1830, it became an autonomous parish. Residents were required to maintain the church of S. Pietro di Cadenazzo. Historically, the local economy included livestock farming and the cultivation of rye, maize, potatoes, walnuts and grapevines. Sheep and silkworms were also raised. This information describes earlier forms of economic activity, not current agricultural offerings.
The historic settlement developed along the alluvial fan formed by the Pianturina, Robasacco and Ruscadella streams. On the plain near Cadenazzo, the Ticino once flowed freely; before it was canalised, the plain was prone to flooding. According to one historical geographical interpretation, Cadenazzo lay on an important transit route to the lakeside settlements of Lugano and Magadino, from which goods arrived in the past. Another historical trace is a castle that once stood in Cadenazzo and was probably destroyed during the Italian Wars. A bridge marked MC 7 is recorded on the old Ceneri road in Cadenazzo.
