Bellinzona: Castles, Museums and Ticino Culture
Accommodation in Bellinzona
Bellinzona is a historic Swiss city and the capital of the canton of Ticino. Its fortress complex, comprising three castles, a distinctive bastion and the city walls, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. If you want to plan your stay around sightseeing, there are different ways to explore the city’s history, from the fortress to churches, theatres and museums, as well as trails through the city.
Fortress and trails through history
The fortress’s three castles are called Castel Grande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro. Castel Grande is the largest of them. The hill on which the castle stands has been inhabited for more than 6,000 years; the southern buildings house an archaeological and historical museum. The hill’s long history of habitation and the fortress’s medieval history therefore represent distinct periods of time.
The La Fortezza di Bellinzona e i suoi castelli route crosses the ramparts and passes through doors built into the wall, leading to hidden rooms. The entire fortress can be explored on foot or by public transport. A seasonal tour runs from the historic city centre to Montebello and Sasso Corbaro castles; the tour, including short stops at the castles, takes about an hour. Check the available dates before your trip.
Churches, theatres and collections
The basic structure of San Biagio church dates back to the 12th century. A historic monument and a place of culture and tradition, the church is open to the public seven days a week. Check access conditions before your visit. Santa Maria delle Grazie was built at the end of the 15th century. A fresco depicts a central Crucifixion surrounded by fifteen scenes from the life of Christ, painted between 1495 and 1505.
Teatro Sociale Bellinzona is the only Italian-style theatre still in existence in Switzerland. It is a historic monument of national importance and part of the European Route of Historic Theatres. Castello di Montebello houses the Museo Civico di Archeologie Regionali. Museo Villa dei Cedri has a permanent collection of art from Ticino, Lombardy and Switzerland, dating from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. Guided tours of current exhibitions are available for groups of up to 25 people on written request; advance arrangements are required.
Green spaces, circular trail and Ticino specialities
Percorso a Bellinzona is a 1.7-kilometre circular trail. Allow about 30 minutes without breaks. The trail is easy, follows an unpaved surface and is suitable for pushchairs. This approximate duration can help you plan how much time to set aside for a walk. It is distinct from the seasonal tour of the two castles, which takes about an hour, including short stops.
The Ponte della Torretta footbridge, which is also open to cyclists, is part of the Preonzo–Giubiasco regional cycle route. Parco della Golena is a large natural area on the River Ticino, just a few steps from the city centre; you can go for a walk in Parco Villa dei Cedri. It is divided into an area with ornamental vegetation and a production area with a large vineyard.
Bellinzona Market is a traditional event in the historic city centre. Stalls offer produce from Ticino’s fruit and vegetable farms, seasonal products, cured meats, Formaggini cheeses from the valleys and Ticino bread. Handicrafts are also sold; some are made on site in front of visitors. The Food & Wine Tour Bellinzona combines a guided walk through the historic old town with stops to sample Ticino specialities, meet local people and taste Merlot wine. It is available year-round, and reservations are required.
