Kirchberg: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Kirchberg
When planning a hotel stay in Kirchberg, it helps to consider the main focus of your trip. Nature, physical activity and culture offer different possibilities: a circular trail with erratic boulders, a nationally important fen, several trails of varying lengths and cultural events with changing programmes. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether the landscape, a sporting activity or an event date should shape your plans.
Bräägg Nature Experience Area and Turpenriet
The Bräägg Nature Experience Area lies on the southeastern edge of Bazenheid. In its northern part, dozens of erratic boulders are arranged along a circular trail. Their arrangement makes the stones part of the trail itself: the view follows the line along the circular trail rather than focusing on a single boulder. From the nature experience area, sure-footed visitors can walk a few hundred metres along the Hörachbach to a roaring waterfall. This offers a different focus from the circuit past the boulders: here, the walk follows the stream to a specific destination. So if you plan both experiences, they represent different ways to explore nature.
Turpenriet is a fen of national importance and covers more than five hectares. It is also one of the amphibian spawning areas of national importance. These two descriptions highlight different aspects of the area: its type of wetland and its importance as a spawning area. A cycle-and-hiking trail from Gähwil towards Kirchberg runs right through Turpenriet. If you plan to take this route, check the current route and access information, as access details may change.
Trails for exercise and longer walks
The Helsana Trail Kirchberg comprises three routes of varying lengths for jogging, walking, Nordic walking or hiking. This allows you to consider both the type of activity and the distance when making your plans. The three lengths offer a choice within the trail network; specific distances are not needed to distinguish it from the stream walk along the Hörachbach: there, a walk of a few hundred metres to the waterfall is described, whereas the Helsana Trail comprises three routes of varying lengths.
Another named route is the Thurweg Toggenburg, Stage 3. It runs from Lichtensteig to Bazenheid, following the Thur through the landscapes of Toggenburg. The clearly named endpoints and the river as a landmark help with navigation. Its description therefore differs both from the three Helsana Trail routes and from the stretch along the stream in the Bräägg Nature Experience Area.
Cultural events and planning your visit
Since 1991, the openOhr cultural association has organised events in theatre, music, cabaret, comedy and satire. Each year, Kultur-Treff Bräägg organises four to five events in theatre, cabaret, music and literature. Theatre, cabaret and music feature in both programme descriptions; openOhr also lists cabaret, comedy and satire, while Kultur-Treff includes literature. You can take these different programme focuses into account when looking for a suitable event. Individual programmes change; venues for Kultur-Treff events may also change. So check the dates and venue before making firm plans for a cultural evening.
The Toggenburg Blacksmithing & Tools Museum is located at Wilerstrasse 69, 9602 Bazenheid. If you are planning a visit, check the current access arrangements beforehand. This allows you to include a possible museum visit separately in your travel plans, alongside the nature and cultural attractions, for which event dates or access information should also be checked.
