Wattwil is located in Toggenburg and combines cultural and historical sites with public facilities and routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Wattwil, you can plan your stay around the focus of your trip—for example, architectural history, sports, cycling, or hiking. The options vary considerably, from a seasonal outdoor swimming pool to routes with specified elevation gains and equipment recommendations.

Historical Traces in Wattwil

Iberg Castle was built around 1230, destroyed during the Appenzell Wars, and rebuilt in 1408. Until 1805, it served as the seat of the prince-abbot’s bailiffs. Iberg Fortress was intended to secure important passes over the Ricken and Laad and to monitor the military activities of the count. The surviving tower of Iberg Castle was rebuilt in 1902 on a hill west of Wattwil.

Other historical references mark different periods: the Monastery of St. Mary of the Angels has stood on Wenkenrüti above Wattwil for around 400 years. The late-classical church was completed in 1848 to plans by Felix Wilhelm Kubly. Bräkerplatz is named after the Toggenburg folk poet Ueli Bräker. In the centre of Wattwil, this pleasantly shaded area offers a bench with a view of the Thur and a table sculpture by Appenzell artist Roman Signer.

A digitally mediated village tour is also among the cultural offerings described: the AR village tour with Watto used QR codes on information boards at nine locations in Wattwil. Alongside the buildings and the square, this offers a place-based form of interpretation as a subject in its own right.

Public Facilities and Sports

Wattwil outdoor swimming pool has a separate diving pool with diving platforms at 1, 3, and 5 metres. The non-swimmer pool is equipped with a current channel and massage jets. The pool is open seasonally; check whether it is open during your travel dates before visiting.

Wattwil mini golf course is located between the Rietwis sports complex and the swimming pool. It has 18 concrete lanes of the Bogoni system. Since operating arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current conditions before visiting. The Rietwis outdoor sports complex includes an athletics facility with a 100-metre track, long-jump pit, and high-jump facility, as well as a natural grass field for throwing events. There is also an all-weather court for football, handball, and basketball, and a beach volleyball area with four courts. Alongside the swimming and mini golf facilities, these specific sports amenities provide different options to consider when planning your trip.

Routes and Current Conditions

Stage 11 of the Herzroute runs from Wattwil to Herisau, with 1,200 metres of ascent and 1,050 metres of descent. For the Herzroute stage from Rapperswil to Wattwil, the signposted Veloland Route 99 is named; it can be ridden by bicycle or e-bike. The route descriptions differ both in their endpoints and in the stated elevation figures. Check route conditions before setting off.

An alternative cycling section of the official Way of St. James runs from Wattwil via Schlosswis and Schlossweid to Laad, where it rejoins the signposted Way of St. James. The original section is not particularly suitable for cycling pilgrims throughout. The Via Jacobi section includes mountain routes, for which sturdy footwear and hiking poles are recommended.

The hiking trail to Feldbach Waterfall has been closed until further notice since August 21, 2026, due to rockfall. Check whether the closure is still in effect before planning your visit.

A description dated April 10, 2026, presents the Toggenburg Foodtrail as an easy, 6-kilometre hike from Wattwil to Lichtensteig along the Thur. Riddles lead to refreshment stops along the way. If you plan to do the trail, check its current availability and booking options in advance.
