Libingen is a village in the municipality of Mosnang in Toggenburg, in eastern Switzerland, with around 300 residents. It lies in a western side valley of the Thur, on a terrace above the Dietfurterbach stream and at the foot of the Kreuzegg. The route over the Kreuzegg leads to the Linth region and the upper Lake Zurich. Libingen was first mentioned in a document in 1416. Hiking is a clear focus; other attractions include St. Gallus Church, the museum in the Rösslischür and further traces of the village’s history.

Hiking trails and viewpoints

The details for two hikes to Libingen make it easy to compare how long they take. From Wattwil, a moderately difficult route covers 9.6 kilometres, with a stated walking time of 3 hours and 45 minutes. The hike from Atzmännig to Libingen is listed as 13.8 kilometres and 4 hours and 45 minutes. This second route is therefore 4.2 kilometres longer, with a stated walking time that is one hour longer. The Wattwil route is rated moderately difficult. Published route figures may be updated; check the details before setting off, and take route conditions and trail surfaces into account as well.

The views described also set the two routes apart. The Atzmännig–Libingen hike offers views of Lake Zurich, the Glarus Alps, the Alpstein range with the Säntis, and as far as Lake Constance; visibility depends on the weather. The Wattwil route passes the Chellenspitz, which offers excellent views of the Säntis, the Churfirsten and the Glarus Alps. Shortly before Libingen, this route passes a steep ravine that can become slippery when wet. Include current conditions along this section in your plans.

The hike from Atzmännig ends at the Libingen, Dorf bus stop. Check route and public transport conditions before your hike. If you would like to plan more destinations on foot, Libingen is a starting point for hikes towards Chrüzegg, Schnebelhorn and Hulftegg.

Church, monastic history and museum

The Baroque Church of St. Gallus was completed in 1769. It houses a statue of Saint Gallus and an 18th-century baptismal font. A small convent for women stood north of the choir and bell tower from 1754 to 1781; it was demolished in 1782. The site of the former convent and parish church of St. Gallus is classified as a protected archaeological site. Remains of earlier churches and chapels are considered important evidence of religious and intellectual history.

The Trychle, Bell and Midwives Museum is located in the Rösslischür. The Rösslischür is open on the second Sunday of each month from March to October, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit so you can fit it into your day’s plans.

Village life and local offerings

An active community life is also part of the village’s character; the Libingen Music Society is especially influential in village life. For everyday shopping, Dorflade Libige stocks fresh produce, other groceries and sandwiches. The selection may change. The Rössli inn and bakery makes its own pear bread.
