Stans combines village history, hiking and the route to the Stanserhorn. The village lies between the Buochserhorn and Stanserhorn; from Stans, you can enjoy views of the Alpine landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Stans, you can plan your stay around whether hiking, the mountain railway or culture and cuisine are your priorities.

Getting here and routes to the Stanserhorn

Stans is accessible via the A2, Stans-Nord exit; the Zentralbahn connects Lucerne and Engelberg with Stans. From Stans station, it is around a five-minute walk to the valley station of the Stanserhorn railway. The ascent begins with the nostalgic funicular railway dating from 1893. At the Kälti intermediate station, you change to the CabriO aerial cableway. If the mountain ascent is part of your plans, check the timetable in advance.

Hiking in the village and towards the mountain

The signposted “Around Stans” hike takes two hours. It passes through residential neighbourhoods, past charming farmhouses and to the Hueblimatt viewpoint. Another hiking route starts in the village centre and leads to the Stanserhorn. Along the way are the Maria zum Schnee chapel, the Kälti intermediate station, the Ahornhütte, Alp Blatti and Rinderalp. The first hike takes you through the village to a viewpoint; the second has the Stanserhorn as its destination.

The summit loop trail on the Stanserhorn includes a protected area for plants. A volunteer Stanserhorn ranger walks between the revolving restaurant and the summit every day, sharing their knowledge with visitors.

Village history and art in Stans

Two architectural periods meet at the parish church of St. Peter and Paul: the Romanesque bell tower was built around 1200, while the church itself was constructed between 1641 and 1647 in the Early Baroque style. The Salzmagazin adds another chapter to the village’s history. It was built in the early 18th century and is a listed building.

From spring to autumn, the Nidwaldner Museum in the Salzmagazin presents special exhibitions on cultural history. The Winkelriedhaus is one of the museum’s three buildings in Stans. Its permanent exhibition introduces visitors to the region’s art history through works from the collection.

The garden of the Winkelriedhaus is also an exhibition venue in its own right: each year, the pavilion presents three temporary exhibitions featuring artists who have a connection to Nidwalden or are of interest to the region. The individual programmes change. A themed village tour offers a different focus, exploring the stories of confident, courageous and creative women who helped shape life in the main town of Nidwalden.

Alpine cuisine and Älperchilbi

CULINARIUM ALPINUM, in the former Capuchin monastery, is a centre for the culinary heritage of the Alps. Its offerings include courses and seminars, as well as products, recipes and dining. It works mainly with authentic, unadulterated regional products from Central Switzerland. The subject ranges from sharing culinary knowledge to products and dining.

The Älperchilbi in Stans attracts several thousand visitors every year. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the date and programme in advance.
