Wolfenschiessen lies in the lower Engelberg Valley between Stans and Engelberg, at an altitude of about 510 metres. The municipality also includes alpine areas such as Arni, Bannalp, Ober- and Untertrüebsee, and Sinsgäu. The highest point is Rotstöckli on the Titlis, at 2,901 metres. The municipality therefore encompasses a variety of landscapes: alongside the valley and mountain areas, hiking trails, mountain railways, a snowshoe trail and local culture are central to choosing an excursion.

Mountain Areas and Mountain Railways

On Bannalp, walking paths wind through alpine meadows and peaceful landscapes. There are hikes for families and leisurely walkers as well as more challenging mountain tours for experienced mountaineers. Lutersee is a mountain lake above Wolfenschiessen in the Engelberg Valley: it lies at an altitude of 1,703 metres in the Uri Alps.

Two aerial cableways have different operating schedules. The Fell–Chrüzhütte cableway, “s’blaiä Bähnli,” takes ten minutes and runs year-round, except during maintenance closures. The Fellboden–Bannalpsee cableway, “s'rotä Bähnli,” takes eight minutes; it runs in summer, approximately from mid-May to the end of October. Check operating times and maintenance or seasonal schedules before your trip.

Hiking Trails and Snowshoe Tour

The Walenpfad leads from the Brunni area above Engelberg to the Bannalp area above Wolfenschiessen. It is 11.2 kilometres long and classified as T2. In recognition of its panoramic views, Switzerland Tourism and the Swiss Hiking Federation named it one of Switzerland’s twelve most beautiful hikes. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The Chapel Trail has a different character: this challenging themed circular trail starts and ends in Wolfenschiessen, is 17.87 kilometres long and focuses on eight chapels. Along the way, it offers views of the Engelberg Valley. The distances distinguish the two routes: the Walenpfad is 11.2 kilometres long, while the Chapel Trail is 17.87 kilometres and described as challenging.

The Zwärgliweg starts on Bannalp. It runs for around three kilometres through the mountain landscape and features seven puzzle stations. Play, exercise and nature experiences come together with the story of Bannalpi and puzzles to solve. Walking time alone is around 90 minutes; allow extra time for stops at the stations. In winter, the Bannalp snowshoe trail is an easy circular hike through the winter forest. It passes slightly above Bannalpsee and heads towards the Urnerstaffel mountain guesthouse.

Gardens, Play and Fire Pits

Tirligartä is a public herb garden with an adjoining barbecue area and a play fountain. The herb trail features around 100 herbs; lists with plant descriptions are available at the entrance. Nearby, at Neufallenbach farm in Grafenort, there is a botanical medicinal herb garden with more than 300 medicinal plants. It is freely accessible every day during the growing season.

There are eight barbecue areas beside the outflow of Bannalpsee. From Wolfenschiessen, you can reach the Brändlen fire pit by aerial cableway, followed by a walk of about ten minutes. There are two well-maintained fire pits, firewood, 15 seats and a toilet. Check the latest information about the facilities before planning your visit. The Kirchmattli playground behind the church has a zip line, a climbing net, a tunnel, tables and benches with seating, and a fire pit.

Cultural Heritage and Local Dining

The Wolfenschiessen Alpine Herdsmen’s Brotherhood was founded in 1675 in honour of St. Wendelin, patron saint of farmers. It preserves old customs and traditions and recognises the work of farmers and Alpine herdsmen. Hechhuis in Wolfenschiessen was built in 1586 and has a knights’ hall and a roof turret. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside; check access information before planning a visit.

Along the Walenpfad, the mountain inn on Alp Oberfeld serves its own products; the selection may vary seasonally. Alp Oberfeld is also home to Peacock goats available for goat trekking. On hikes, the goats carry a picnic in their pack saddles.
