Stansstad on Lake Lucerne
Accommodation in Stansstad
Stansstad lies on the narrow stretch of water between Kreuzrichter and Lake Alpnach, between BĂĽrgenberg and Pilatus. Its lakeside location and history give your trip a variety of possible focuses: you can explore historic buildings, choose trails through the landscape or set aside time by the lake. To help you plan, compare the routes by length, difficulty and character.
Historic buildings and local history
The Sust is part of Stansstad’s transport history: a Sust was a building used for the temporary storage of goods before transport, and one in Stansstad is first documented in 1538. The present building was commissioned by Niklaus Purtschert in 1799/1800. The Sust usually hosts four art exhibitions a year, organized by the Stansstad Cultural Commission. If an exhibition is important to your visit, check the current calendar.
The Schnitzturm, Stansstad’s landmark, was built in the mid-13th century as part of a small castle complex. As a watchtower, it was used to monitor the harbor entrance and the lake route to Alpnach. Today, the former defensive tower is an observation tower right on Lake Lucerne; access information may change, so it is worth checking before your visit. The building thus connects its former function with its present-day role as a lakeside viewpoint.
Fürigen Fortress also tells the story of the region’s military history. It was built in 1941/42 as one of several fortifications in the Nidwalden and Obwalden area as part of Switzerland’s National Redoubt strategy. Original equipment from the 1940s has been preserved; the museum offers an impression of preparations for a possible attack during the Second World War. The fortress has been open to visitors as a museum since 1991. Opening hours may change, so check visitor information in advance.
Stansstad is also home to two churches with different names: the Church of the Holy Family was consecrated on September 27, 1943. Its rectangular hall has an adjoining sacristy. The Catholic Church of St. Anna in the village was also consecrated in 1943. If you are interested in local history and architectural styles, you can include these sites alongside the Schnitzturm and the Sust in your own tour of the area’s different historical themes.
Lakeshore, marshland and nature
Stansstaderried is designated a fen of national importance. Together with Klosterwald, it forms an important amphibian spawning area. The lakeshore at Garnhänke has been revitalized, with the reed beds and shallow-water zone expanded. These landscape features contrast with the historic village center and offer nature lovers more to explore during their stay.
There are various ways to spend time by the water. The publicly accessible General-Guisan-Quai bathing area on the shores of Lake Lucerne is also known as Harissen Park. From Stansstad railway station, it takes five minutes to reach the quay by bike. The Stansstad lido is right by the lake, next to the Schnitzturm and the boat landing; it offers lake access and a large outdoor swimming pool. Since access and operating conditions may change, check the latest information if you plan to visit.
Compare hikes and activities
Two hikes with different profiles make for a useful comparison. “From the Lake to the Resort” is 6.02 kilometers long, rated moderate and runs from Stansstad to the Bürgenstock Resort. Along the way, you pass the Schnitzturm and the entrance to Fürigen Fortress. Its 200-meter-long cave system is now a museum. The “Around Lake Alpnach” loop is longer at 9.07 kilometers and is described as easy. It starts and ends at Stansstad railway station or the Stansstad boat station. The distances and difficulty ratings can help you choose between the two options based on how far you would like to walk; trail conditions may change.
The loop around Lake Alpnach passes through nature reserves with reed-lined coves and information boards. From Alpnachstad, take the Zentralbahn railway back to Stansstad. Another option is to visit the eleven stations along the BĂĽrgenberg memorial trails. One important wheelchair-accessible section of these trails runs from Stansstad to Kehrsiten, or in the opposite direction. As conditions on individual sections may change, check the latest route information before setting out.
There are also specific activities and routes on the water and by bike: the “Stansstad–Kehrsiten: Lakeside Cycling Tour” is a flat route along Lake Lucerne from Stansstad to Kehrsiten. The Stansstad Sailing School GmbH offers sailing lessons in Stansstad Bay; check course availability before your trip. Stansstad can be reached by train or boat. As timetables may change, it is advisable to check the latest connections.
Village tour and trip planning
The guided village tour “The Pearl on Lake Lucerne” is offered in Stansstad and also covers the military events during the French invasion of 1798. If you would like to include this tour in your plans, check the latest booking details. This lets you plan a specific historical theme separately from the sites you choose to visit on your own.
