Treyvaux – Natural Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Treyvaux
For a stay in Treyvaux, the landscape, culture and seasonal visits offer different ways to shape your plans. The town is less than five minutes from the N12. When planning, consider whether you would rather organise your stay around walks, a performance or a visit with a set time slot. The offerings also differ in whether they relate to a current programme of events, a historic feature or seasonal opening hours.
Natural Landscape and Scenery
The municipality offers numerous opportunities for walks in a protected and varied natural landscape. The part of the municipal area bordering the banks of the Petite Sarine was designated entirely as a nature reserve in 2012 for 50 years, until 2062. The village lies in a valley hollow north of the wooded La Combert hill, in the pre-Alpine hills of the Fribourg Central Plateau. The broad valley hollow of the Treyvaux village stream is flanked by the heights of Gros Bugnon (837 metres), Chênes d’Essert (890 metres) and La Combert (1,082 metres). In the western part of the municipality, the Senèdes village stream and the Ruisseau de la Verasse flow directly into the Sarine. In their lower reaches, both have carved deep ravines through erosion. The local landscape thus brings together hollows, wooded heights and deeply incised waterways.
St-Pierre: Historic Character and Seasonal Visits
The Church of St-Pierre de Treyvaux overlooks the cliffs of the Sarine, one kilometre west of the village. It is one of the canton’s oldest churches, and its overall form has been preserved in its medieval style. The former church can be visited from April to October on the first Sunday of each month, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Check access again before your visit. If the visit is an important part of your plans, arrange your schedule around this seasonal time slot.
Arbanel and Local Culture
Arbanel was founded in Treyvaux in 1973 at the initiative of a group of theatre enthusiasts. In 1991, the municipality made the former gymnasium available to Arbanel; it was renovated and equipped, and within a few years became a cultural centre. Today, Arbanel offers cultural seasons featuring 18 performances, most of them professional. Arbanel is accessible by public transport from Fribourg. Check the dates of the performance you want to see if you would like to make Arbanel the focus of your stay. Treyvaux also hosts a Mass for the Armaillis, first celebrated in May 1968. This brings together a current theatre programme and a tradition with historical roots as distinct aspects of local culture.
Outdoor Activities and Regional Products
BikeYard offers dirt-jump mountain biking, with different lines for beginners and advanced riders. Treyvaux also has a Parcours Vita fitness trail. Together with the walking opportunities, these offer different ways to enjoy outdoor activities, from a stroll and a named trail option to a specific mountain-biking discipline.
At Terre d’Elles, Gruyère AOP is available year-round and supplied directly by the producers. In the café corner, visitors can sample hot drinks, artisan iced tea, beer or Fribourg wines. Check the latest visitor information if you plan to include the café corner in your stay.
