Givisiez lies on the western outskirts of Fribourg, about two kilometres as the crow flies west-northwest of the cantonal capital and at an altitude of 630 metres above sea level. When planning a stay, train connections, a discovery trail and various cultural sites offer practical points of reference. This lets you consider the town’s location alongside the themes that interest you.

Location and Getting There

Givisiez railway station is served by two rail lines: the S30 runs between Fribourg and Yverdon-les-Bains, and the S20 between Fribourg and Neuchâtel. The station is therefore a useful point of reference for travelling by train. As train services can change, check the current timetable for your travel date.

Givisiez extends along the southern slope of the Tiguelet stream valley in the molasse hills of the Fribourg Central Plateau. The municipality includes molasse hills between the valleys of the Sonnaz and the Saane, woodland and farmland, as well as the formerly marshy Tiguelet valley. These geographical features give the town a connection to the surrounding landscape, complementing its location on the western outskirts of Fribourg.

A Trail Between Local History and Nature

The Sentier découverte – Entre pierres et racines is a discovery trail through Givisiez and its surroundings that takes about two hours. Its first section recalls the history of Givisiez in the town centre. The second leads to Moncor Forest and showcases natural points of interest. The trail thus brings together two distinct themes: local history and nature. The duration is approximate, so allow about two hours for the walk.

The Chemin du Travail offers another thematic perspective. Its sculptures pay tribute to human activity in both professional and domestic settings. The Chemin du Travail lies downstream from the Terrasses du Manoir. If you plan to include this path in your itinerary, check its accessibility locally.

Art and Cultural Heritage

The Manoir de Givisiez is a heritage building dating from the 16th century. A themed tour of the manor includes ten works of art by artists from Fribourg, as well as a walk through the garden. The programme thus combines art with a stroll in the garden. If you plan to visit the manor, check the current visiting arrangements and guided tours in advance.

Saint-Laurent Church also has several notable connections to art history. It houses a PietĂ  attributed to Hans Geiler, created in the early 15th century. In addition, seventeen stained-glass windows by Bernard Schorderet were installed between 1950 and 1980. The PietĂ  and the stained-glass windows come from very different periods, giving them distinct historical significance.

The Château d’Affry houses 500 glass plates from the Fondation Marcello. The Chapelle de la Faye is a pilgrimage site; the rosary is prayed there in summer. This seasonal practice may vary. Together, these places illustrate different facets of local heritage: artworks in a château and a church sit alongside a pilgrimage site with a seasonal religious practice. Visiting arrangements may differ from one place to another; check them if you are planning a specific visit.
