Schwarzenburg combines striking architectural heritage and local traditions with hiking and e-bike routes. The town is in the Swiss canton of Bern and belongs to the Bern-Mittelland administrative district. This blend is especially tangible at Schwarzenburg Castle, Wahlern Church and the ruins of Grasburg Castle.

Castle, church and chapel

Schwarzenburg Castle was built in 1573–76 to replace Grasburg Castle. It was the seat of the bailiffs and later of the district governors. The historical connection between the two names therefore goes back to the castle’s construction: it was built to replace Grasburg Castle and, as a stately residence, offers a small glimpse into history.

Wahlern Church offers a different perspective. It stands on a hill spur northeast of the village of Schwarzenburg and is visible from afar. Its architecture can be clearly assigned to the Romanesque period of the 12th or 13th century. The church is open during the day from 09:00 to 18:00; check the opening hours again before your visit.

Chäppeli Schwarzenburg is also worth a look as a distinctive building in its own right: the chapel dates from 1463 and has a unique pyramidal tower. The castle, church and chapel thus represent different historical and architectural aspects of Schwarzenburg, without their stories being confined to a single era.

Traditions and distinctive village trails

The Schwarzenburg farmers’ horse races have been held since 1970 in Häusern, on the natural arena directly below Wahlern Church. The programme includes flat races with and without saddles, trotting races, skijoring, and relay races with riders and bikers. The events may vary from one edition to the next. So, if you are planning to travel for the event, check the dates and the programme for that year in advance.

The Schwarzenburg Gnome Trail runs through the village and features ten imaginative concrete sculptures and sculptural groups. Here, the focus is on artistic figures in the village rather than on the history of a castle or church. The trail adds a distinctive, playful touch to Schwarzenburg’s attractions.

Hiking, e-biking and scenery

The Spycherweg can be enjoyed year-round for a short hike. A longer e-bike option is the Gantrisch 333 Legends Route: it is around 50 kilometres long and includes five legend stops. The entire route is signposted with Veloland cycle-route markers. From Fribourg, Route 4 leads to the welcome point for the Legends Route in Schwarzenburg.

Another hiking destination is Grasburg Castle. From Schwarzenburg Castle, it can be reached in around forty minutes on foot. The ruins stand on a rocky spur above the Sense; from there, you can look out over the freely flowing river. The activities mentioned differ considerably in terms of planning: a short hike on the Spycherweg, around forty minutes on foot from the castle to Grasburg, or an e-bike route of around 50 kilometres.

The hike from Guggisberg to Schwarzenburg offers a different perspective: it follows scenic trails past Guggishörnli and opens up views of the Schwarzenburg region. The section overlooking the distant Jura Mountains, on the other hand, is part of the final stretch of a particular hiking trail to Schwarzenburg.

Museum and regional products

The Gantrisch Regional Museum explores the region’s ethnographic, historical and cultural heritage, from the Sense to the Gürbetal. It is a five-minute walk from the railway station. The museum opens its doors for guided tours and events on request, so arrange such a visit in advance.

The Naturpark-Lädeli shop in Schwarzenburg Castle offers a selection of regional products, including syrup, punch, honey, herbs, teas, quinoa and pasta. If you are going there specifically for a particular product, check the current selection in advance.
