Discover Frutigen
Accommodation in Frutigen
Frutigen can be explored through several layers of history: a medieval castle complex stands alongside traces of early 20th-century railway history. The town lies in the mountain landscape of the Bernese Oberland; the mountains Niesen, Männliflue, Gehrihorn and Drunengalm are associated with Frutigen. Tellenburg Castle has been a ruin since a fire on 20 October 1885. It was first mentioned in official records in the 13th century under the name “Wohnturm Ry”; at the time, it was owned by the Barons of Kien.
Ruins, Railway and Technical Insights
Railway history includes the Spiez–Frutigen railway, which opened in 1901, and the Bern–Lötschberg–Simplon railway, which opened in 1913. The former Frutigen railway station building, dating from 1901 to 1913, has been faithfully restored. Frutigen can be reached by train from Bern or Spiez. The BLS Visitor Centre is about a five-minute walk from the station and can be visited individually during opening hours without prior registration; check the current times before your visit. The exhibition includes railway models from four eras of the Lötschberg line and may change over time.
The guided tour of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel also starts at the BLS Information Centre in Frutigen. A group tour includes a visit to the Mitholz technical control centre. As the programme may change, it is worth checking the latest information before booking. The Zündhölzlimuseum offers a different insight into regional production: it explores the history of match production in the region around Frutigen and is located in the former match factory in Kanderbrück. Admission is by donation; check the current visitor arrangements before travelling.
Hiking, River and Cycling Route
The “Wild Floodplain Landscape in the Entschligetal” hike starts at Frutigen station and follows the “Holzskulpturenweg” (Wood Sculpture Trail) signposts upstream along the Entschlige. Check seasonal trail conditions before setting out. Another documented route is a circular trail: it starts at the station, first heads to the Kander, then continues to Tellenburg Castle and returns to Frutigen via Reinisch and the Engstlige. It is classified as easy hiking, grade T1, and requires no special technical skills. The two descriptions therefore differ above all in route shape: one follows the Entschlige upstream, while the other is a circular trail.
The Hostalde suspension bridge in Frutigen is 153 metres long. A route by the bridge runs along the Engstlige and a natural floodplain conservation area. Free parking is available for the bridge at Adelbodenstrasse 212, 3714 Frutigen; as parking availability may change, check before driving there. A cycling route also starts in Frutigen: it runs via Reinischstrasse and Elsigbach to Elsigenalp, then descends past Brandsee to Höchst. When planning this route, take current road and trail conditions into account.
Leisure Activities at Frutigresort
The climbing tower at Frutigresort has three levels and 64 climbing stations; up to 90 people can use it at the same time. Its 20-metre-high panoramic platform flies Switzerland’s largest free-hanging national flag. During the climbing tower’s opening hours, the platform is free for all visitors to access.
The Murmeli adventure playground on the Frutigresort grounds extends through a cave system more than 100 metres long, with five underground play areas, and is free for all visitors to access. The Erlebnis-Eisenbahn offers train rides around the grounds, and the mini-golf course has 18 varied holes. You can ride a mountain bike, BMX bike, skateboard or scooter on the pump track; it is also free to access. As the operating status of facilities may change, check the latest information before visiting.
Seasonal Experiences and Regional Products
Elsigenalp offers outdoor activities and insights into alpine cheese-making. Six lifelike animal figures are hidden along the animal-figure orienteering course. At the alpine cheese dairy, you can watch a cheesemaker at work and sample fresh alpine cheese on site. Tours take place on Wednesdays in July and August and are conducted in German, English and French; check the dates for the relevant season. The free Krimi Spass Elsigen-Metsch starts at the Elsigenalp cable car’s mountain station. As both the animal-figure orienteering course and Krimi Spass are seasonal activities, check whether they are operating during your travel dates.
Three markets are held in Frutigen village centre each year. The traditional Frutigmärit always takes place on the last Friday in October; for specific planning, it is advisable to check the current calendar. At the Frutigen markets, more than 40 stalls offer handicrafts and “Gluschtigs” (tasty treats). The Tropenhaus Frutigen offers another culinary link between nature and production: it combines fresh mountain water, fish farming and a tropical garden; sturgeon and caviar are at the heart of the visitor experience.
