Sangernboden lies in the Bernese Pre-Alps in the Gantrisch region, on the north bank of the Kalte Sense. It is one of the source rivers of the Sense; politically, Sangernboden belongs to the municipality of Guggisberg. The river’s location and the municipality it belongs to provide a sense of direction, while the church and several routes offer specific places to visit during your stay. If you are looking for a hotel, your trip’s focus can help guide your choice: nature and the river, a visit to the church, or one of the numbered winter routes.

Location and getting there

The Sangernboden–Kalte Sense area is listed in the second supplement to the Federal Inventory of Floodplains of National Importance. Transport routes also help you find your way: the access road to the Gurnigel Pass runs through the Sangernboden area. The Gurnigel route 323 runs year-round at least twice a day via Riggisberg, Gurnigel, Sangernboden, Zollhaus, Plaffeien and Schwarzenburg. Check the current timetable before your trip so you can plan your journey around the departure times. Schwefelberg-Bad lies above Sangernboden, below the Gurnigel Pass summit, and belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Rüschegg. When finding your way around, it is therefore worth distinguishing Sangernboden from this place in Rüschegg.

Sangernboden Church

The Sangernboden Church has stood above the village since 1931. Inside, a stained-glass window depicting the Passion of Jesus by Swiss painter and writer Leo Steck is particularly noteworthy. Sangernboden has its own Reformed church, which is open at all times. The window gives the building a distinctive artistic feature; it can therefore be a focus of your stay in its own right, alongside the routes and scenery. Local visiting arrangements may change. If you specifically wish to visit the church, check the latest visitor information in advance.

Winter routes and planning your time

The marked Gantrischli snowshoe tour starts in the Muscherenschlund, an unspoilt side valley reached by road from Sangernboden. You can also walk to the starting point from the bus stop in Sangernboden; this adds around 50 minutes to the walking time. The circular route is 6.8 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes. If you walk from the bus stop to the starting point, allow extra time. The information therefore distinguishes the circular tour itself from the longer access route to its starting point. Route information and conditions may vary by season.

The Schwarzenbühl–Otteleue winter hiking trail is rated easy, is 4.3 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes. It can be continued as far as Sangernboden. Compared with the stated walking time for this trail, the Gantrischli circular tour takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes; walking from the bus stop to the starting point adds around 50 minutes there. This makes it easier to factor the time needed for the two winter routes into your day’s plans, without treating their different distances and access routes as equivalent.

The Schwefelbergbad Trail offers another indication of the time needed: it starts in Sangernboden or at Schwefelbergbad, is 3.85 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. Together with the information on the winter hiking trail and the Gantrischli snowshoe tour, its distance and duration can provide an additional basis for planning. Check the relevant route conditions before setting out.

Cheese and dining

Nearby, the Alpchäsi Gantrischli turns milk from five Muscherental alpine farms into cheese from the end of May to mid-September. It sells its alpine cheese at the Alpbeizli and from a self-service kiosk. The stated production period makes cheese a seasonal aspect of your trip planning; the production period and sales outlets may change. If you wish to plan your visit around it, check the latest information in advance.

The Gasthof Hirschen Sangernboden offers a seasonal restaurant serving traditional cuisine, a tasting menu and an extensive wine list. Restaurant services and operating arrangements may change; if you have specific plans, check the current offering. Alongside the routes and church visit, regional cheese production and a restaurant are therefore distinct interests to explore during your stay in the area.
