Rüschegg: Winter offers, trails and local history
Accommodation in Rüschegg
Rüschegg combines winter sports with hiking trails, waterways and local history. To plan your trip, you can focus on the activities you want to shape your stay: winter slopes and cross-country trails, themed paths, or the municipality’s cultural and landscape features.
Ski lifts and cross-country ski trails
Rüschegg’s winter offerings include five ski lift facilities in Eywald, Lischboden, Selital and Gägger, with more than 35 kilometres of well-groomed downhill slopes in total. The Rüschegg Eywald winter sports area is listed as having 13 kilometres of slopes. It is also home to a 2,263-metre-long ski lift, described as the fourth-longest ski lift in Switzerland. Snow and operating conditions may vary by season; check the information for your visit.
Cross-country skiing offers a different way to plan your winter: the Gantrisch cross-country skiing centre has 45 kilometres of mechanically groomed trails. The slope kilometres and trail length refer to different activities and help you distinguish between the options when planning your winter break.
Hiking trails with their own themes
There are around 95 kilometres of hiking trails within the municipality, maintained by the municipality and the Rüschegg tourist association; the Gantrisch Panorama Trail also passes through Rüschegg. A special trail option is the Gäggersteg family trail: this easy circular hike crosses a bridge up to eight metres high. At eight experience and themed stations, you can learn how four century storms shaped the forests in the Gurnigel area.
Different travel information applies to the Gäggersteg depending on the day. During the high season, visitors can take the nature and sports bus on weekends from the Schwarzenburg S-Bahn connection to Rüschegg Süfternen, Kreuzung. On other days, take PostBus route 323 to Gurnigel, Wasserscheide, then continue on foot along the Panorama Trail; the outward walk takes about an hour and a half. As the bus connection is available only on weekends during the high season, check the timetable and the most suitable connection for your visit.
The Gantrisch Forest Discovery Trail is in Längeney Forest in the municipality of Rüschegg and is about 1.5 kilometres long. Its ten stations explore the development of trees and the forest as a whole. The Gäggersteg focuses on forest history and the century storms, while the Forest Discovery Trail explores trees and forest development.
Summer by the water and out cycling
The Eywald outdoor swimming pool is located at an altitude of 1,050 metres and is open during the summer months. Facilities include a heated 25-metre pool with a diving board and a children’s pool. A solar system heats the pools to 25–29 °C. The seasonal opening period and operating conditions are relevant when planning a visit. There are also places to swim and spend time along the banks of the Schwarzwasser, Gambach and Wyssbach.
Mountain bike tours and excursions of varying difficulty also offer a way to explore Rüschegg and the Gantrisch region. One specific option is the moderately difficult Gantrisch Legend Route for e-bikes, which is 51.8 kilometres long. It follows Veloland Route 4 to a scenic place of interest in Rüschegg. There, visitors can hear or read the story of the man said to be the first itinerant trader in this region.
Church, art and local history
The Reformed church stands on the green Rüschegg hill. It was built in 1812–1813 according to plans by architect Johann Daniel Osterrieth as a hall church with a hipped roof. Inside is the large woodcut “Schwarzwasser II” by Franz Gertsch, an artist who lived in Rüschegg. Traditional occupations included itinerant trading, basket weaving, and repairing pans and cauldrons. This local history complements today’s options, which range from winter activities to themed hiking and cycling trails.
The Gantrisch range forms the southern boundary of the municipality; Rüschegg also includes the upper reaches of the Kalte Sense. Another architectural feature is the covered wooden Untere Schwandbrücke bridge over the Biberze, which connects the Rüschegg–Rüeggisberg area.
