Beatenberg is situated on a sunny terrace high above Lake Thun and offers panoramic views of the Bernese Oberland Alps, including the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The village is about 10 kilometres by road from Interlaken and is an ideal starting point for excursions to the Lake Thun and Jungfrau regions. From Interlaken, Beatenberg can be reached by road in around 15 minutes.

History

Beatenberg is first mentioned in ecclesiastical documents dating from 1230. The opening of the road to Interlaken in 1865 marked the beginning of Beatenberg’s final transformation from a poor mountain village into a popular spa resort.

Landscape

When hiking on the Niederhorn, the trails lead across green alpine meadows, through heathland and light fir forests. Ibex and chamois can be observed along the hiking trail on the Niederhorn in many seasons. A hike in Beatenberg offers views of the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and Lake Thun.

Nature and Enjoyment

Numerous medicinal herbs grow in the Beatenberg poison, medicinal and dragon herb garden; some are marked with numbered signs. The signs identify individual plants in the garden. While enjoying dragon tea in the shop or garden restaurant, visitors can obtain information about the plants in the poison, medicinal and dragon herb garden. This information is available both in the shop and in the garden restaurant.

The fondue backpack is collected at the railway ticket counter in Beatenberg and can be taken to a location of your choice on the Niederhorn, where you can prepare and eat fondue.

Experiences

The 6-kilometre Rocky's Run scooter-bike route leads directly from Vorsass to Beatenberg Station and takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Scooter bikes can be rented at the Vorsass middle station and returned at Beatenberg Station by 6 p.m. The Vorsass–Beatenberg section of the Niederhorn excursion can be covered by scooter bike or on foot. The approximate duration of 20 to 30 minutes describes the time frame for the route mentioned.

During the first kilometre, the adventure trail on Beatenberg towards Rischerebödeli passes a stone circle and a large play castle for children.

Culture

The Crystallos exhibition in Beatenberg displays local crystals as well as crystals and minerals from around the world, along with healing stones, water mixtures and costume jewellery from around the world.

The St. Beatus Caves at the foot of the mountainside below Beatenberg comprise a cave world with fascinating formations.

Winter

The Beatenberg-Niederhorn ski area offers skiing on prepared slopes. Sledges can be rented at the mountain station on the Niederhorn for a small fee; the moderately difficult sledging trail is also suitable for beginners.

Routes and Getting There

The hike near Beatenberg or Waldegg can be reached by train to Interlaken West, followed by a bus to Beatenberg, Waldegg.
