Landscape and walking trails

Hofstetten lies on a sunny, peaceful plateau at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn, away from through traffic and at an elevation of around 650 m. The municipality is in the Bernese Oberland in the Alps. The Aare forms the municipality’s southern boundary; the small, higher-altitude Wyssensee also lies to the south. Lake Brienz nearby offers opportunities for swimming and water sports. The four circular trails in Hofstetten focus on nature, views and relaxation. This means you can choose between trails centered on landscape and relaxation and activities on the water.

Ballenberg: crafts, animals and play

Ballenberg showcases more than 30 traditional skills and occupations across its grounds. During the season, more than 200 farm animals live there; the animal collection also includes breeds that are now rarely seen in Switzerland. At the petting area, children and adults can get to know farm animals up close. Ballenberg has a large adventure playground with a petting area, as well as a forest playground. The adventure playground includes a climbing tower, a long slide, wooden horses and a historic bowling alley.

Hands-on activities are also part of the program: with guidance, visitors can make butter and learn to bake wafer-thin «Bretzeli». Ballenberg courses cover traditional crafts, specialist techniques and professional courses delivered over several modules. Hands-on course experiences in spinning, blacksmithing and pottery round out the program. This gives you the choice of discovering traditional skills, observing animals, enjoying play facilities or trying your hand at crafts.

History of Hofstetten

Hofstetten probably has Roman-Helvetian origins. A Roman road ran through the village from Kien Castle in Kienholz over the Brünig. In the Middle Ages, Hofstetten was connected with the Lordship of Ringgenberg, Interlaken Monastery and the city of Bern. Its history thus links possible early origins with medieval ties to several named centers of lordship and administration.

Trip-planning formats

The offerings also differ in format: Hofstetten has four circular trails focused on nature, views and relaxation; the public factory tour at Trauffer lasts about an hour; and the Ballenberg courses span several modules. You can plan your stay around the landscape, a tour or hands-on craft experiences.
