Gsteigwiler: Gsteig Church, Village Trails and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Gsteigwiler
Gsteigwiler lies at the gateway to the Lütschinen valleys and at the foot of the Schynige Platte. Wooden houses and well-kept gardens shape the village landscape. The surrounding scenery also includes fruit trees, diverse flora and lush flower meadows, as well as views towards the Lütschinen valleys and the Lütschine River. Historic buildings, baking traditions and hiking trails offer different points of interest for planning your trip.
Gsteig Church and Historic Buildings
Within the municipality of Gsteigwiler, Gsteig Church is considered the oldest surviving religious building between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Its oldest foundations are believed to date from the 8th century; the church was first mentioned in writing in 1196. It has been protected as a Swiss heritage site since 1965.
Inside, different types of window construction and intricate stained glass reveal Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. The church also features secco paintings dating from the 14th to the 17th century, including works by the painter Diebold. The paintings were uncovered and restored during the 1974/75 renovation. The building thus brings together different layers of history.
Together with the church, the parsonage, the Pfrundscheune and the inn form a church complex. Built in 1768, the Pfrundscheune is used as a venue for various events; individual programmes may change. The church grounds also include a covered wooden bridge and an unusual hillside cemetery. A walk across the wooden bridge leads to Gsteig Church.
Baking Traditions and Events
The old Ofehüsi was renovated and made operational again in 2021. On open baking days and at open breakfasts, a baking group demonstrates its skills. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates before visiting.
Various concerts take place in the Gsteig parish district, and visitors are welcome. A church service is held at Gsteig Church every Sunday morning at 9:30. As concert performances and service times may change, it is a good idea to check the current programme for specific dates.
Village Walks and Mountain Trails
The village walk in Gsteigwiler is an easy 3.31 km circular route. The Schynige Platte Panorama Trail is a challenging 5.6 km circular route that starts and ends in Gsteigwiler. It is listed as taking approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes to walk; the actual duration may vary depending on conditions and hikers. A trail above the village offers better views of the historic houses. The routes therefore differ both in length and in their stated level of difficulty.
Gsteigwiler lies at the foot of the Schynige Platte; with a little luck, chamois can also be spotted on mountain hikes in the area. The landscape offers a variety of experiences: views of the Lütschine and the Lütschinen valleys, a village scene shaped by wooden houses and gardens, and the chance to spot wildlife on a mountain hike. Which of these perspectives appeals to you most can help guide your choice of activities during your stay.
Aerial Experiences
The Gsteigwiler-Interlaken heliport offers skydiving; confirm availability before booking. A helicopter sightseeing flight from Gsteigwiler offers a bird’s-eye view of the Swiss Alps. The heliport lies at the foot of the Swiss peaks Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. These activities add an aerial perspective to the impressions of the village and its hiking trails.
