Saxeten is a mountain village at around 1,130 m above sea level, above Wilderswil, and is part of the LĂĽtschine valleys: the Saxetbach flows into the LĂĽtschine. Numerous springs rise in the upper valley basin. The almost traffic-free mountain village lies in a high valley with tranquil, unspoilt and undeveloped nature. The stream, springs and valley landscape shape the character of the village.

Hiking trails from a riverside loop to a mountain hike

The hiking and mountain-hiking trail network ranges from an easy loop along the Saxetenbach to more challenging mountain hikes. There are nature-trail information boards along the riverside loop. The Saxeten Trail is rated easy, signposted in both directions and follows the wild, unspoilt Saxetbach back to the starting point at Skipintli. This makes it possible to distinguish between different types of trail without presenting them as one single loop.

One listed route leads from Saxeten via Bällenhöchst and Sulsseeli to the Lobhornhütte SAC, then continues to Isenfluh and Lauterbrunnen. Another hike over the Morgenberghorn starts at the schoolhouse in Saxeten and leads to Aeschiried, Suld Pochtenfall. The 2,249 m summit offers views of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, as well as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau; visibility depends on the weather. Alpine conditions and seasonal transport options may vary on this hike.

Shorter route details can also help you choose a hike: the walk from Saxeten via Aabeberg to Interlaken takes about three hours. The actual walking time may vary depending on conditions and pace; the season and weather may also affect the route. The Fürst rest area is along the way, with a small shelter, benches, a wooden table, a fire pit and a fountain. The Innerberg alp is on the Saxeten–Rengglipass hiking trail; seasonal access conditions may vary.

Art on the Saxetbach and cultural landscape

The Saxeten artwork is a growing sculpture by George Steinmann, created between 2002 and 2006. Its three components include a pedestrian bridge, a hermitage and a site at the University of Bern, UniS. The 19-metre-long bridge crosses the Saxetbach and provides access to the hiking trail, which was interrupted by storms in summer 2005.

The 16 m² hermitage can be reached via the Saxeten hiking trail. It offers people, regardless of their origin, worldview, religion or physical condition, an opportunity to pause, reflect or meditate. From there, a sightline opens northwards out of the valley and southwards towards the valley basin and the Schwalmere mountains. The bridge, hermitage and views connect the artwork with the landscape without reducing it to a single viewpoint.

The cultural landscape also includes the Ramsermatte, which received the Cultural Landscape Award of the Oberland-Ost region in 2012. Wetlands meet dry habitats there. The diversity of biotopes supports a wealth of species, including numerous butterflies. Water is also connected to beer production: the Rugenbräu brewery in Matten uses Saxeten water.

Winter trails and seasonal activities

In winter, the toboggan run in Saxeten is about four kilometres long, traffic-free and well prepared; grooming depends on winter conditions. A small ski-training lift for beginners is available next to the Skipintli restaurant. As a seasonal facility, its current operation depends on snow and local conditions. When conditions allow, the Saxetenbach loop is cleared for walking.

As part of the tobogganing experience, a walk of just under an hour leads from Saxeten, past the Skipintli restaurant and the PostBus terminus, to Alp Nessleren, passing mostly frozen waterfalls. Moonlight tobogganing takes place every year. The Schlittelchilbi, a tobogganing festival with traditional music and entertainment, is also held annually. If you are planning a specific winter visit, it is worth checking the dates and local conditions in advance.
