Wengen lies on a sheltered, sunny terrace at 1,274 metres above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Above the valley, the view stretches to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Wooden chalets and Art Nouveau hotels are part of the village’s character. Wengen is also a car-free residential and holiday resort. So when looking for a hotel, it is worth considering its mountain location alongside how to get there: from Lauterbrunnen, you can reach Wengen by public transport, on foot or by bicycle.

Getting There and Rail Connections

The journey on the Wengernalp Railway from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen takes twelve minutes. The railway provides passenger and freight services for this car-free residential and holiday resort. Timetables and operating hours may change, so check the connection for your travel date. From Wengen, the railway climbs to Kleine Scheidegg, where passengers can transfer to the Jungfrau Railway.

Hiking Trails and Seasonal Activities

The Männlichen–Wengen hike follows easy trails alongside the Lauberhorn ski run and offers far-reaching panoramic views. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season. In summer, the “Lauberhorn Trail” also follows the famous World Cup course from the start hut to Wengen. A walking path leads to the Leiterhorn viewpoint; 2.5 kilometres and 60 minutes are given as approximate figures for the one-way route.

In winter, the “Fox Run” toboggan run follows the Lauberhorn downhill course from Wengernalp to Wengen. The route is 4.5 kilometres long; operation depends on snow and safety conditions. Wengen also has a ski practice area for beginners, which is open depending on seasonal operations. An artificial outdoor ice rink is located in the centre and is also a seasonal offering.

The “Royal Ride” offers a different perspective: a cable car with a roof terrace takes visitors from Wengen to Männlichen. This experience can only be booked during the summer season. When planning, you can choose between hiking and rail routes in summer, and tobogganing and other winter activities as distinct seasonal options.

Village History and Notable Buildings

Wengen’s character is shaped by more than just chalets and Art Nouveau hotels. The eight historic small barns known as “Geisshitten” stand in a row; some are still covered with wooden shingles. They became known as motifs for Caran d’Ache paints and Chocolat Suchard. Above Wengen stands Villa Krapp, dating from 1905, with its pointed turrets. The Hotel Belvédère in Wengen dates from 1912.

The two churches also have different histories. Wengen Church was built in 1953 by Ernst Indermühle. St Bernard’s was built in 1927 and consecrated by the Bishop of Fulham on 15 January 1928. The church serves English-speaking residents and visitors; services are held in English. As service arrangements may change, check with the church for the latest information before visiting.
