Discover Wettingen
Accommodation in Wettingen
Wettingen is located in the central Limmat Valley in the canton of Aargau, in the district of Baden, and borders the city of Baden directly. Your stay can focus on different things: the monastery peninsula, exhibitions, or walks through the vineyards. You can choose based on which of these aspects of the town you would like to explore more closely.
Monastery peninsula and Limmat Cultural Trail
Wettingen Abbey, with its abbey church and outbuildings, is one of the best-preserved Cistercian abbeys in Switzerland and a cultural asset of international importance. The medicinal herb garden is also located on the monastery peninsula. It is home to medicinal herbs, spices, flowers and certain varieties of vegetables. The garden is open year-round and free of charge; check the latest access information before your visit.
The seven-kilometre Limmat Cultural Trail walking route also passes through the monastery peninsula. Along the way, around 30 sculptures, statues and site-specific art installations are on display. For orientation: the Cultural Trail runs from the Neuenhofer Stausee reservoir via the monastery peninsula and Baden’s old town to the municipal area of Ennetbaden. The route links several stops along the way, with the artworks adding a cultural focus to the walk.
Art and museums
Since 1972, the gallery at Gluri Suter Huus has presented ongoing exhibitions of contemporary art in a striking half-timbered building in the centre of Wettingen. Themed cabinet exhibitions offer insights into the art collection of the municipality of Wettingen, which comprises more than 1,000 works. As a group of adults, you can also book private tours of the current exhibition outside opening hours; arrange a time with the gallery in advance.
On the monastery peninsula, Museum Aargau offers interactive exhibitions, challenging tours, as well as guided tours and workshops on faith, power and knowledge. As the visitor programme may change, check which offers will be available during your stay.
Walks and wine-growing
The Ängeliweg starts at the abbey and leads to twelve outdoor sculptures, passing fountains, parks and playgrounds. This family outing is suitable for pushchairs. Another walk takes you through Wettingen’s vineyards: the vineyard educational trail shares information about the annual cycle of the vines and offers views of Wettingen and the Limmat Valley. It starts below Sonnenblick and follows Mooshaldenstrasse towards Schartenfels.
Wine events also offer an insight into Wettingen’s vineyards. The Räbhüslifest traditionally takes place on the Sunday before the school summer holidays. Wettingen’s winegrowers welcome guests in their own vineyard huts. At Grafeguet, a wine tasting is held annually from Friday to Saturday on the first weekend of November. You can enjoy raclette or fondue in the cosy wine cellar. Check the exact event dates when planning your stay.
Swimming and ice skating
Tägi outdoor pool has a swimming pool with eight lanes, each 50 metres long. Tägi ice rink has two ice surfaces: one is covered, while the other is open-air. If you plan to go swimming or ice skating, check the latest information about the facilities in advance.
