If you’re looking for a hotel in Baden, you can plan your stay around thermal waters, culture or time outdoors. Baden is the central town of the Baden-Wettingen region, considered the largest urban area in Aargau. The city brings together a long tradition of bathing with museums and historic sites; paths also lead through the Old Town, into wooded areas and along the Limmat. The options vary in terms of experience and time required, helping you choose a place that suits your interests.

Thermal waters and bathing culture

Baden is known for its long tradition of bathing in mineral-rich thermal waters. The FORTYSEVEN wellness spa offers thermal water at 47 °C, as well as five indoor and three outdoor pools. Public bathing at the Heisse Brunnen offers a different experience: you can bathe in natural thermal water, with the pools ranging from 37 to 43 °C depending on the weather. Check the latest access conditions before your visit, as temperature and access information may vary. This lets you choose between the spa’s pool facilities and public bathing at the Heisse Brunnen.

Castle ruins and museums

Stein Castle was once an administrative centre of the Habsburgs. What remains includes sections of the circular wall, foundations for building walls carved out of the rock, remains of the walls of a fortified palas and a small watchtower. The third stage of the Habsburg Way leads from Brugg to Baden via the Gebenstorfer Horn and Baldegg to Stein Castle, and then on to Baden’s Old Town. Trail conditions may vary; check the current situation before setting out.

The Langmatt Museum is one of Europe’s most significant private collections of French Impressionism. The villa, now a museum, and its park host an established programme of exhibitions and events that brings the collection into dialogue with contemporary works. The museum grounds in the Römerquartier include a park with a large variety of trees. At the Landvogteischloss, you can explore rooms from different periods and ways of life, including the bailiff’s kitchen and a Biedermeier parlour.

The Swiss Children’s Museum uses historical originals, hands-on stations, audio-story stations and shared play to show how children’s everyday lives, games and toys have changed over the past 300 years. Weekend activities complement the programme. Storytelling sessions at the museum and theatre performances in the park are regular features.

Art trails and viewpoints

The 7 km Limmat Cultural Trail runs through Baden’s Old Town and features around 30 sculptures, works of art and site-specific art installations. The “Chänzeli” tour focuses on something different: it passes four viewpoints, including two “Chänzeli”, and provides information about Baden’s history, geology, flora and fauna. This historically themed panoramic city walk around Baden is 9 km long and takes about three hours. Comparing the distances and approximate durations helps you gauge how much time to allow for each option.

The Baldegg Water Tower stands above Baden, surrounded by forest. Climb 172 steps to a platform with 360-degree views across the Swiss Plateau, the Alps and the Black Forest. If you want to explore natural areas, the Teufelskeller has been a protected nature reserve since 1987. The forest is no longer managed and can develop freely as a diverse ecosystem. A well-marked, family-friendly hiking trail leads through the area, with large barbecue areas along the way.

Out and about along the Limmat

The Limmat promenade combines nature and water with urban vibrancy, making it ideal for walking, jogging and cycling. At Unterer Bahnhofplatz, the promenade lift offers the quickest route from Baden railway station to the Limmat promenade. In addition to hikes and viewpoints, you can also choose activities by the river if you’d like to enjoy some outdoor exercise during your stay in Baden.
