Discover Aargau: Nature, Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Aargau
When looking for a hotel in Aargau, it is worth first deciding on the themes of your trip: hiking, rivers and floodplain landscapes, or cultural history. The region offers a variety of options, from tranquil natural areas to Roman sites and castles. Decide which experiences you want to shape your stay, then compare hotel offers according to your own requirements.
Forests, rivers and floodplain landscapes
The “Thiersteinberg-Homberg-Horn” forest nature reserve covers 165 hectares and is the largest contiguous forest reserve in the canton of Aargau. A jungle trail through the forest’s regeneration area following the “Lothar” storm of the century leads to a yew forest with trees over 100 years old. This combines an insight into the development of the forest with a specific hiking destination; check local access conditions before your visit.
The floodplains offer a different natural setting: the canton’s floodplain protection park consists of eight protected floodplain areas along Aargau’s rivers. At Klingnau Reservoir, the floodplains provide food and shelter for around 350 bird species and serve as a resting place during their journeys. Near Rottenschwil, the Stille Reuss is Switzerland’s best-preserved oxbow lake. Extensive walks and opportunities to observe insects, amphibians and birds give this place a different focus from the forest reserve. This lets you distinguish between forests, river floodplains and wildlife observation when planning your trip.
Hikes with different focuses
Hiking conditions vary across Aargau: the lower Aare Valley has easy, flat routes, while more challenging trails can also be found in the north of the region. Well-marked hiking trails pass through a variety of landscapes and include many different types of routes. Those planning a longer walk in stages can consider the 60-kilometre Fricktaler Höhenweg. It runs through the Fricktal from Rheinfelden to the Mettau Valley and can be enjoyed as a day trip or as part of a multi-day hiking holiday. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Shorter hikes with a connecting theme also offer specific options: a route from Schinznach-Dorf to Thalheim links the wine trail, the Roman vineyard and the ruins of Schenkenberg Castle. Another hiking route starts at Hallwyl Castle in Seengen and follows the shore of Lake Hallwil to Mosen. The Jurapark Aargau encompasses the hilly landscape of the Folded and Tabular Jura between Aarau, Brugg, Laufenburg and Rheinfelden. The park is a regional nature park of national importance; check the park boundaries when planning your route.
Roman history and castles
Around 2,000 years ago, Vindonissa, Switzerland’s only Roman legionary camp, stood in the Brugg and Windisch area. The Vindonissa Legionary Trail offers tours, Roman-themed overnight stays, guided tours and events; it operates seasonally, so check before your visit. The experience also includes Switzerland’s oldest amphitheatre. The Vindonissa Museum houses the largest collection of Roman writing tablets; the Roman garden beside the museum is unique in Switzerland in its size. This allows you to plan archaeological sites and a museum visit as different ways of exploring Roman history.
The castles offer different points of interest. Hallwyl Castle is located in the Lake Hallwil nature reserve; its permanent exhibition explores the architectural and family history of the noble House of Hallwyl. Public guided tours and events are held there regularly—check the current calendar when planning your trip. Lenzburg Castle is one of Switzerland’s most important hilltop castles. Wildegg Castle offers splendid gardens and a museum where talking castle residents take visitors back to the Baroque era. Vines have been cultivated at Wildegg for more than 400 years, and the vineyard is still maintained today. These examples offer different perspectives on exhibitions, gardens, architecture and the history of viticulture.
More themes to help plan your trip

Confirm the current facilities and access options before travelling. Aargau specialities include carrots, Baden Spanischbrödli pastries and cherry brandy.
