Lenzburg between castle history and the Aabach
Accommodation in Lenzburg
Lenzburg Castle is one of Switzerland’s oldest hilltop castles and offers a journey through 1,000 years of history. The residential museum, other exhibitions and historic gardens take visitors from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. This allows you to shape your visit around different eras and themes. The children’s museum offers activities including medieval games, dressing up, crafts and role-play.
Museums between past and present
At the Burghalde Museum, the story of life in the region spans from the Stone Age through Roman finds and medieval crafts to industrial history. Ten children’s stations featuring puzzles and a time-travel story with Professor Weasel complement the exhibition. The Icon Museum is in the basement of the building. This historic complex is near Lenzburg’s old town, in a park with a children’s playground.
The Stapferhaus focuses on a different subject: major issues of the present day. Immersive exhibition spaces invite visitors to critically engage with the questions of our time. The building is right next to Lenzburg railway station. It is fully wheelchair-accessible and has a lift on every floor. As visitor information may be updated, check accessibility details before your visit.
Old town, garden trail and Roman traces
The old town has a horseshoe-shaped layout. Rathausgasse is the wide main street; parallel side streets run to the north and south, while Kirchgasse crosses them. On a guided tour of the old town, knowledgeable local guides accompany visitors and share stories and background about the historic streets. If you would like to join a tour, check the latest booking details beforehand.
The Lenzburg Town and Castle Garden Trail can be followed as a circular route. Its stops include Burghalde, MĂĽllerhaus, the town church, Schloss West and Schloss Ost. Check the current route locally before setting off. The marble run also passes through several parts of the town: this interactive route is around two kilometres long, has seven stations and runs from Gofersberg via the castle area to the old town and the Burghalde Museum. Route details may change.
A nearly completely preserved Roman theatre lies in Lindfeld near Lenzburg. It once held around 4,000 people. The theatre is freely accessible to walkers at all times; check local conditions before your visit. The town’s archaeological remains also include a Neolithic burial ground and a Roman settlement with a theatre.
Views, trails and countryside
Lenzburg lies in the Seetal valley, around three kilometres south of the Aare. The wooded hills of Berg and LĂĽtisbuech, two foothills of the Rietenberg, lie south and southeast of the town. From the Esterliturm tower, the panoramic view stretches across the Seetal and Aargau; on a clear day, you can also see the Alps and the Black Forest. The viewing platform is 45 metres high and can be reached by climbing 253 steps.
There are several fire pits with tables and barbecue grills around the Esterliturm. You can combine a visit to the tower with walks or hikes through the Lenzburger Berg; the FĂĽnfweiher pond and other hiking trails are nearby. Those interested in industrial history can also follow a signposted educational trail of almost twelve kilometres along the Aabach, created by the Association for Industrial Culture. The Aabach enabled the textile industry to develop. A cycling tour starts at the railway station, first passes through the old town and then follows the Aabach through the forest. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Literature, markets and architecture
Literary events and workshops have been held at the Aargau Literature House in Lenzburg since 2004. Another testament to the town’s architectural history is the house on Bleicherain, built in 1785 on behalf of Gottlieb Hünerwadel. The cantonal heritage conservation office describes it as the “finest Aargau patrician house” of the 18th century.
At Lenzburg’s markets, local producers offer fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, fish and baked goods. Market dates and vendors may change, so check what is taking place during your stay. Together with the museums, old town and trails around the Aabach, these make up a range of different ways to spend your time in Lenzburg.
