Rupperswil: Floodplain landscape along the Aare and local history
Accommodation in Rupperswil
Rupperswil combines the renaturalised Aare landscape with traces of architectural and village history. You can shape your stay around two distinct interests: the river landscape with its floodplains, or the town’s churches, industrial buildings and homes.
Floodplain landscape and nature along the Aare
Near Rupperswil, a renaturation project with new side channels transformed the river landscape into a floodplain. The Aarau-Wildegg floodplain area covers 270 ha and, following renaturation, once again contains all the characteristic features and habitats of a floodplain. The Oberer Fahrschachen nature forest reserve in Rupperswil is part of the Aargau Floodplain Protection Park. Information boards at the reserve provide an insight into enhancement measures along the Aare between Aarau and Wildegg. The Rupperswil Floodplain Protection Park is freely accessible at all times.
A carefully renaturalised floodplain landscape stretches along the Aare between Wildegg and Rupperswil, making it suitable for hikes and bike rides with a swimming stop. Conditions at individual bathing spots may vary. For a refreshing dip, the Rupperswil-Auenstein outdoor swimming pool also offers a 50 m swimming pool with a diving area and a children’s paddling pool. Facility details may change; check them before your visit.
Recreation spots and directions
The Brötliplatz picnic area in Rupperswil Floodplain Protection Park is located beside a side channel of the Aare, in the area of the former football pitch. From the car park by the wooden bridge, it is about a ten-minute walk along a forest path. The «Füllere» playground and picnic area is at the western end of Höhenweg, on the edge of the forest. The playground and picnic area in Stockert is close to both the forest lodge and the football pitch; parking is available at the junction of Schweizistrasse and Alter Schulweg, about a ten-minute walk away.
Church and industrial history
Rupperswil Reformed Church was built in 1921/22 in the Neo-Baroque style, based on designs by Basel architects Ernst Benedikt and Paul Vischer. It replaced a demolished medieval church. The church contains three large chancel windows from 1938, measuring 345 × 130 cm. Felix Hoffmann (1911–1975) created depictions of the Crucifixion, Peter’s denial and the washing of the sinner’s feet. The church is part of the «Felix Hoffmann Trail» of the Reformed Church of Aargau, which also includes Aarau City Church, the church on Kirchberg, and the churches in Buchs and Suhr.
The Old Spinning Mill was built in 1837 as the founding building of Richner, Rupperswil’s textile factory, later known as Bebié and Steiner. With its sober, neoclassical façades, it represents early factory construction in Aargau. A planned waterwheel was intended to power a mechanical cotton-weaving mill, which was to operate via a supply channel in the Aare plain. The workers’ boarding house by the Aare Canal also tells the story of local industry: built in 1867 as accommodation for workers, it is a late Neoclassical masonry building. With its intact exterior appearance, fully preserved interior layout and substantial elements of its historic furnishings, it is one of the best-preserved workers’ boarding houses in Aargau.
Village museum and historic homes
The Rupperswil Village Museum was established in 1984 in Wiederkehr House, a multi-purpose rural building with a thatched roof, dating from the early 18th century. The house’s original layout has been fully preserved. Some of the extensive furnishings come from Wiederkehr House itself, while others come from elsewhere, and together they provide a vivid picture of rural domestic life. A timeline places key dates in the village’s history in the context of Swiss history and world events. Villa Steiner offers another point of architectural interest: the late Neoclassical mansion dates from 1856 and features parquet floors from the time it was built, elaborate interiors dating from around 1910 and an ornamental garden on the south side.
