Muri lies on the Lindenberg in the rural Freiamt region of the Swiss Central Plateau and is the district capital of the district of the same name. For almost 1,000 years, the village has been closely associated with its Benedictine monastery; the former monastery is considered a place of vibrant cultural history. Its themes range from sacred architecture and art to regional traditions and trails through the Freiamt landscape. This means you can consider cultural history and outdoor activities as different focuses when planning your trip.

Monastery Church, Cloister and Guided Tours

The monastery church combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. Its octagonal interior is the largest domed central-plan building in Switzerland. The cloister features famous stained-glass windows; almost all were made in Zurich workshops in the 16th century. The Loreto Chapel in the cloister adds another historical touch: since 1971, it has been the most recent burial place of the House of Habsburg. St. Goar’s parish church has copper dragon gargoyles dating from 1661 and is classified as an object of regional importance, with priority B status.

Murikultur offers private and public guided tours of the monastery complex throughout the year, some also in English, French and Italian. Muri Info also organizes tours of the monastery and its museums. Check the current tour schedule before booking, as times may vary.

Museums Exploring Monastery History and Art

The Muri Monastery Museum displays sacred objects such as monstrances, chalices and donor panels, and tells the stories of the abbots, monks and Habsburgs. The Caspar Wolf Museum has a different focus, exhibiting oil paintings, gouaches, drawings and prints by the painter, who was born in Muri. In addition to a permanent exhibition, it hosts changing cabinet exhibitions on Caspar Wolf, his art and his era.

The Singisen Forum focuses on temporary exhibitions by contemporary regional artists, art and cultural education, and interdisciplinary projects. The Between Plough and Grain Museum turns its attention to the Freiamt: using exhibits, machines, equipment and the stories behind them, it illustrates how farming life has changed over the past 100 years.

The Museum of Medical History Books Muri is located in the monastery’s historic Singisen wing. Its permanent exhibition presents significant works from the early modern period. Public and group tours explore historic books and medical science. The range of museums thus spans sacred objects and art, as well as agricultural and scientific history.

Hiking Trails in Muri and the Freiamt

The hiking area around Muri includes quiet country lanes across the plain that climb to the heights of the Lindenberg. A hike from the monastery leads through the typical moraine landscape of the Freiamt to the Stille Reuss, a biotope of national importance. In Murimoos, there is a 3.5-kilometre circular trail with a total of 18 information boards.

For a longer excursion in the region, the Freiämterweg offers a different scale: this nature and culture trail is more than 117 kilometres long and passes through the Freiamt’s natural landscapes and cultural landmarks. Muri is one of its possible starting points. When choosing a route, you can therefore distinguish between a trail from the monastery to the Stille Reuss, the circular trail in Murimoos and the longer regional hiking trail.

Traditions and Events Throughout the Year

Muri has a long-standing carnival tradition. During carnival season, the municipal council hands over the keys of power to three carnival associations every year. The Räbenlichterumzug lantern procession takes place each year in early November for kindergarten children and pupils in the first and second grades. On three evenings in late November, children and adults can visit St. Nicholas and his Schmutzlis at the festively decorated Maiholz forest hut.

The annual markets also help you plan your calendar of events: the May market is Muri’s second annual market and takes place on the first Saturday of the month. The Martinimarkt on 11 November is Muri’s oldest annual market. As event dates may change in detail, it is advisable to check the latest dates before making specific plans. From September to May, the Mansarde Cinema screens a selection of current films every other Thursday and Friday; its programme may also change.

Visitor Information and Offerings at the Monastery Courtyard
